Transcript ofThe heart is unique in that the cardiac cells are able to generate their own electrical activity and conduct them throughout the heart allowing for the cardiac muscle to be
stimulated. Once stimulated, the muscle can squeeze creating the pump action to move blood around the body. The cardiac conduction system is made up of several

different parts, but the one we are most concerned with for this module is the sinoatrial or SA node. This is the pacemaker of the heart. The SA node generates a signal
that is passed along through the cells until is reaches the next part of the conduction system. The cells in the heart are highly dependent on oxygen in order to function

Transcript ofAs we learned, oxygenated blood is critical to the bodys various systems, and especially for the heart, to function effectively. In cardiac arrest, the heart has stopped and
blood is not being pumped at all. The focus of resuscitation attempts needs to be on maximizing the perfusion of the coronary arteries, By doing this, the heart maintains
audio:
good blood flow to the cardiac tissue and creates better opportunity for the cardiac conduction system to restart. This means delivering a compression rate of 100-120
compression per minute as well as limiting ventilations to fewer than 12 per minute. Additionally, the first two minutes of resuscitation will consist of uninterrupted
to allow for the cardiac tissue to be well perfused. Compressions create the mechanical action of the heart pumping blood to the vital organs and perfusing

Through better CPR we can

transform cardiac arrest survival

rates
Transcript ofAs you have learned, the rates of survival from cardiac arrest in the pre hospital setting are low. To increase survival rates, it is critical that resuscitation efforts be of the
highest quality and provide much needed oxygen quickly to the critical organs of the heart and brain. Early perfusion of the heart requires compressions be delivered at an
audio:
appropriate rate with limited interruptions. These actions allow for the cardiac cells to receive necessary oxygen through the coronary arteries. Cardiac cells that are well
perfused are more likely to generate the needed electrical impulses which stimulate the cardiac muscle. Through better CPR we can transform cardiac arrest survival rates
for the better.
