If students are to be productive members of today's workplace, they must move beyond
the skills of the 20th Century and master those of the 21st Century. The characteristics of
the 21st Century classroom will be very different from those of the classrooms in the past
because the focus is on producing students who are highly productive, effective
communicators, inventive thinkers, and masters of technology.

Some common tools that your children may encounter and use include, but are not
limited to:
Blogs A blog is a website where student work can be published online. It is also a tool often
used for collaboration and communication among students and teachers. Blog can also be used
as a verb, meaning to maintain or add content to a blog. This could include EduBlogs and
Wordpress.
Google Apps- An online suite of productivity and digital tools.
Wikis A wiki is a website that allows visitors to add, remove, and edit content online.
Class Site This is where all assignments, documents, homework and videos will be posted.
Podcasts A podcast is a digital audio file that is distributed over the Internet for playback on
portable media players (such as Mp3 players) and personal computers.
Videos A video is a recording displaying moving images and audios. Digital video files can
incorporate photos, voiceovers and music. This could be loaded on our class site or pulled from
various sites such as YouTube. Some clips or full-length videos could be pulled for the
enhancement of literature and could have an R rating.
Social bookmarking Social bookmarking is ways for Internet users to store, classify, share
and search Internet bookmarks.
Really Simple Syndication RSS is used to publish frequently updated content such as blog
entries, news headlines, or podcasts. It allows users to subscribe to Internet content. A
commonly used tool for RSS is Google Reader.
Shared Notebooks- Shared Notebooks are live and allow students to collaborate in a digitized
space, taking the notebook to a 21st Century level.
Social Media- Students are not required to have a social media account, but will have the option
to participate in twitter chats for collaboration and enhanced instruction outside of the classroom.
This will help your child adapt to a flipped classroom model, and receive assistance and
instruction immediately.

What will I gain?

Developing thoughts about what they are learning, what they understand and
dont understand, as well as why it is meaningful or not

Making connections to their learning by exploring what others have written

about it on the web

Expressing ideas and bouncing those ideas off of a much larger audience

Asking questions that will make a reader think and want to comment

Using visual aids, music, videos, etc. to enhance writing and reading.

What is prohibited?

No last names

No plagiarizing

No personal info like addresses or phone numbers

No profanity

No destructive criticism

If any student violates any of the prohibited policies, they will be immediately removed
from the class blog and Twitter experience. They will be provided with external
assignments, for sufficient credit- aside from the assignment the policy was violated
during.
