AJAX, Ont. A short memory is one of the most valuable traits an athlete can have.
After a tough 3-1 loss to the United States in womens baseball action on Friday night,
Canada knows it cant dwell on the result.

Highlights

Id be lying if I said we arent upset about it, Canadas Ashley Stephenson told a group
of reporters at the Presidents Choice Ajax Pan Am Ballpark post-game. We came here
to win today. But you get an hour to be ticked off and then its gone.
You get a good night sleep and we get ready to take on Venezuela tomorrow.
American starter Marti Sementelli stifled the Canadian squad all night. The 5-foot-3
righty mixed her pitches well, leaving Canadas hitters off balance.
She needed just 63 pitches to make it through six innings before handing the ball over
to the bullpen to nail down the save.
She was good. She hit her spots, said Stephenson. The umpire was giving her (the
outside strike) and she took advantage of it.

Canada outhit its rivals from south of the border nine to five, but the hosts couldnt
produce hits when the situation called for it.

With the bases loaded in the fifth inning, Sementelli induced a 1-2-3 double play ball off
the bat of Bradi Wall and got catcher Stephanie Savoie to strike out to solve the jam.

season so far

We didnt tear the cover off of the ball but we had our chances too, said Stephenson.
They capitalized on their chances and we didnt capitalize on ours.
Canadian starter Jessica Berube was solid, throwing five and 1/3 innings while striking
out seven in the loss. The only trouble she got into was in the fourth inning when the
U.S. scored all of its runs.
Michelle Snyder hit a bases loaded single to score two and a third run scored on a
throwing error by first baseman Jennifer Gilroy.

Thats baseball, said Canadian head coach Andre Lachance about his teams inability
to capitalize on scoring chances. I thought we did lots of things right tonight. We faced
a good opposition (and) two great pitchers on the U.S. side. Thats the type of game you
expect to play when you play Team USA.
Entering the night, Canada knew it would likely have to beat the U.S. on Sunday
regardless of the outcome.
With Friday night behind them, Lachance knows they have to regroup and refocus for
their game on Saturday.

We want to see (the U.S.) again for sure, said Lachance. Thats the plan. Its been the

plan since Day 1 of this journey and I think theyre expecting us to be there too.

But first we have to focus on Venezuela tomorrow.

Canada takes on Venezuela Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. with the loser taking the bronze
medal and the winner earning a date with the Americans for gold on Sunday afternoon.
