How can we transform a common piece of

waste in Airdrie homes to something new and

useful?
As we learned from the evidence we collected last weekend, our families create a lot of
waste! We all have heard of the 3 Rs:
Reuse

Reduce
Recycle

For this project it will be up to us to use all 3 Rs to work in groups of three to transform a
common piece of waste into something useful! Then, you will need to present your newly
transformed product to the class as if you were selling it.
Follow the steps on the following page to complete your project. At the end of
every step, make sure you have a teacher initial it so you can move forward.
Use the resources below to help build your project. These links will also be posted on the

Helpful Tip: We will be using iPads for a large part of this project. Demonstrate good
digitial citizenship by staying on task and supporting your peers.

Steps
1. Research ways the item your group will be transforming has
been disposed of in the past and in our community. Post
your insights to Edmodo! Questions will be on the board.
Answer on your own.
2. Brainstorm ideas about ways your group can transform
your item.
While brainstorming, think about what materials you will
need.
Ask yourselves: Is this is something we can make in a
week?
3. Make a plan for how your group is going to work together
to transform your item. Think about assigning roles to
each person in your group.
4. Make sure you keep detailed notes of who is doing what!
You will be asked to write in your journals!
5. Start transforming your item!
Work together and research any questions you have on
the iPads. Ms. Donahue-Reid and Mrs. Dixon will be ready
to help so dont be afraid to ask questions!
6. Start building your presentation. Decide on PowToon or
BrainShark as a group. Your presentation will need the
following:
A flowchart on how your product was made from the
beginning, to how it ended up in our homes, to how it is
usually disposed of.
A flowchart of how you chose to transform your item.
Answer the question: How is the piece of waste
currently disposed of in Airdrie?
Tell the class about your transformed product.
Answer the question: How will transforming this piece
of waste change the amount of waste our families
produce over time?
Share with the class about what you found in your
research!

While your group should include all these

things, make your presentation interesting! You
are trying to sell your product!
7. Write a presentation script so each group member has
something to say! We will be recording our presentations to
post so families and friends can share our work!
8. We will present to the class and receive feedback on
how to make our presentations even better. Use this
feedback and revise your work. No one has a perfect
project on the first try.
