Instrumentation Technician

Applications are invited for the post of Instrumentation Technician in the Department's
Electronics Section, currently at our city centre Pembroke Street buildings,
1. The Department
The Department's Pembroke Street buildings house lecture theatres, laboratories, computer
and design suites, a library, mechanical and electronics workshops and administrative
facilities.
At Pembroke Street there are 20 teaching and research staff, 7 academic-related staff, and 25
assistant staff. There are approximately 100 full-time research workers and about 180
undergraduate students.
The Department also has buildings in Tennis Court Road and on the West Cambridge Site.
2. Principal Responsibilities
1. Repair, test, calibrate and arrange servicing of laboratory instruments and
equipment e.g. chromatographs, spectrophotometers, balances, chillers.
Demonstrate the operation of equipment to researchers.
2. Install electrical equipment e.g. data loggers, for research apparatus.
3. Assist with the development of equipment for research and teaching.
4. Maintain the instrument database of all equipment used in the Department. Use the
database to assist staff and researchers with selection and location of equipment.
5. Carry out electrical safety checks on fixed and portable equipment (PA testing).
6. The Head of Department may also, from time to time, require the job holder to
perform other duties appropriate to the grade of the post.
3. Qualifications and Experience
Advanced City & Guilds HBTEC HNC or equivalent in electronics, mechanical engineering
or physics.
Applicants must be able to work on their own, with a team and have a flexible approach to
their work.

4. Hours of Work and Salary


This post is 36.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday, and carries a holiday entitlement of 36
days, including bank holidays and the Christmas/New Year closure. Most teaching takes
place in two intensive eight week terms and leave is not normally taken during these periods
other than under exceptional circumstances. The post grade is 5 which is point 34 on the
single spine. The salary will be in the range 23,811 to 26,779.
