Dear UEXCEL Board Members,
It is with both pride and pleasure I write this letter of support and recommendation for Mary Hendrickson, RN, BSN,
OCN for Level II RN credentialing process to Level IIl. Mary has worked at University of Colorado Hospital since 2011
when she was hired as an Ancillary Care Partner on the Oncology/BMT unit. During her tenure, Ihave seen Mary grow
tremendously in both her nursing practice and leadership skills. Mary has taken initiative and advantage of every
‘opportunity for growth and development at UCHealth. Highly respected by her charge nurse peers, staff, patients, and
leadership alike, Mary has blossomed into a “go to” permanent charge nurse. She consistently conducts herself with grace
and poise whether she is caring for patients, precepting, or functioning in the charge role. Mary possesses true integrity as
evidenced by her passion for improving patient care and staff engagement on our unit. She truly embraces “doing the right
thing... simply because it is the right thing to do”.
Mary has always exhibited a passion for Service Excellence. She has been involved in our unit’s Service Excellence
committee for over two years. However, last summer, Mary recognized our units’ HCAHPS and Employee Engagement
Survey scores were lower compared to previous years. She took this to heart, She was elected to be the Service Excellence
Committee chairperson. This is a testament to staff's confidence and respect for Mary’s dedication to improving patient
care and staff satisfaction. She has lead and implemented several initiatives during this last year. The development of a
“Bright Ideas” email account and suggestion box is one of them. Mary follows up and publishes progress of staff
suggestions to improve care and workflows on our unit, Additionally, she introduced a new workflow on our unit where
patients are given staff phone numbers every shift and are educated on who to call for specific needs. This has resulted in
a drastic improvement of our Oncology unit’s responsiveness scores... from the 9" to 42" percentile! Recognizing the
importance of staff buy-in, she conducted a unit-based journal club regarding patient satisfaction efforts. Additionally,
Mary actively engages and promotes patient rounding efforts. During these interactions, she truly embodies UCHeall
Standards of Excellence and has carried herself with positivity, integrity, and flexibility when our unit has experienced
extensive change over the last year.
For Mary’s policy and procedure work for Level III, she completed a thorough literature search and updated our unit's
guideline titled, “Preparation of the Stem Cell Transplant Patient for Fractionated Total Body Irradiation. This policy is
essential in safe care of our BMT patients, and will further enhance the quality of care that is delivered on the unit. One of
Mary’s most valuable skillset is her teaching and precepting abilities. She is an expert preceptor on our unit and has been
consulted to critically assess the learning needs and problem solve with new graduate nurses who struggle to meet
milestones. I can safely say that she has single-handedly prevented the resignation of at least one new graduate nurse over
the last year. Her precepting efforts are invaluable to our leadership team, Mary has also shown her commitment to the
profession of nursing and Oncology. She obtained her Oncology Nurse Certification in 2015 which shows her expertise
and commitment to lifelong learning and the nursing profession. In addition, Mary is a member of the Oncology Nursing
Society and has attended multiple conferences.
Mary is an asset to the field of nursing, our unit, and organization; we are extremely fortunate that she is an integral
part of our team. She actively leads on the unit and is highly respected by her peers. Mary embraces and models
UCHealth’s Standards of Excellence, Thank you for considering Mary Hendrickson for a Level III RN within the
UEXCEL leadership program. Mary has shown that she possesses the skills necessary to perform at this level. Please do
not hesitate to contact me for any additional information.
Respectfully submitted,
Jamie Nordhagen, RN, BSN, OCN. Nurse Manager, Oncology/BMTO
