CLASSROOM ACCOMMODATIONS
PHYSICALLY DISABLED
LIMITED HEARING/DEAF
TEACHING
ACCOMMODATIONS
VISUALLY IMPAIRED:
VISUALLY IMPAIRED STUDENTS WOULD BENEFIT MOST SITTING AT THE
FRONT OF THE ROOM WHERE THE BOARD IS CLEAR. FOR THESE STUDENTS I
WILL USE LARGE PRINT BOOKS AND PRINTOUT ASSIGNMENTS AND
DIRECTIONS IN LARGE FONT. FOR BLIND STUDENTS I WILL WORK CLOSELY
WITH THE SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER TO HELP THE STUDENTS WITH
THEIR LISTENING SKILLS, COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT, MOBILITY, AND
LITERACY SKILLS. BRAILLE BOOKS WILL BE PROVIDED FOR THOSE WHO NEED
THEM. (HALLAHAN, KAUFFMAN, & PULLEN, 2015) I WILL ALSO USE A
MICROPHONE TO AMPLIFY MY VOICE FOR ALL THE STUDENTS.
PHYSICALLY DISABLED:
FOR STUDENTS WITH PHYSICAL DISABILITIES I WILL COLLABORATE WITH A
SPECIAL EDUCATOR TO UNDERSTAND AND MEET THE STUDENTS COGNITIVE,
SOCIAL, AND PHYSICAL NEEDS. I WILL USE ADAPTATIONS AND ASSISTIVE
TECHNOLOGY TO PROVIDE FULL PARTICIPATION AND ACCESS TO THE
GENERAL CURRICULUM. I WILL ALSO IMPLEMENT ANY ADAPTATIONS NEEDED
TO THE EDUCATIONAL ENVIRONMENT TO FULLY ACCOMMODATE THE
STUDENT. (HALLAHAN, KAUFFMAN, & PULLEN, 2015)
LIMITED HEARING/DEAF:
FOR STUDENTS WHO ARE DEAF OR HARD OF HEARING I WILL USE
CURRICULUM-BASED MEASUREMENT TO MONITOR THEIR PROGRESS IN
READING FLUENCY, COMPREHENSION, WRITTEN EXPRESSION AND MATH. I
WILL ALSO IMPLEMENT HAND GESTURES USING ASL AS A FORM OF
COMMUNICATION IF NEEDED I WILL REQUEST THE USE OF A ASL
TRANSLATOR. FOR THESE STUDENTS I WILL FOCUS ON DEVELOPMENT OF
THEIR COGNITIVE AND COMMUNICATION SKILLS. (HALLAHAN, KAUFFMAN, &
PULLEN, 2015) I WILL USE A MICROPHONE AND ANY OTHER NEEDED
TECHNOLOGY THAT ALLOW THE STUDENT TO HEAR ME CLEARLY. BY USING
THEIR PREFERRED LANGUAGE I SHOW THAT I GENIALLY CARE AND AM
WILLING TO WORK HARD FOR MY STUDENTS.

LEARNERS I HAVE FORMED PROFESSIONAL
RELATIONSHIPS WITH MULTIPLE PEOPLE IN THE FIELD
OF ABA AND SPECIAL EDUCATION. I PLAN TO
COLLABORATE WITH THEM WHENEVER I HAVE A
QUESTION OR PROBLEM.
WEBSITES LIKE THE COUNCIL FOR EXCEPTIONAL
CHILDREN PROVIDE FREE WEBINARS FOR THOSE
WHO DESIRE TO LEARN MORE ABOUT EXCEPTIONAL
LEARNERS. (CEC, 2015)
THERE ARE ALSO OPPORTUNITIES TO VOLUNTEER AT
ABA CLINICS, SPECIAL EDUCATION FACILITIES, AND
SPECIAL EDUCATION CLASSROOMS.
THE GREATEST SUPPORT AND INFORMATION WILL
COME THROUGH COLLABORATION WITH OTHER
SPECIAL EDUCATORS. IT IS IMPERATIVE TO MAINTAIN
AN OPEN LINE OF COMMUNICATION AND FEEDBACK
BETWEEN GENERAL EDUCATORS AND SPECIAL
EDUCATORS. (HAUGE & BABKIE, 2006)

REFLECTION
THROUGH THIS ASSIGNMENT, I WAS GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO REFLECT ON
THE INFORMATION I LEARNED THROUGHOUT THIS CLASS AND THE
EXPERIENCES I HAD. GOING INTO THIS I NEVER REALIZED HOW MANY SIMPLE
MODIFICATIONS COULD BE MADE TO IMPROVE THE GENERAL LEARNING
ENVIRONMENT FOR ALL STUDENTS. EDUCATING STUDENTS WITH EXCEPTIONAL
NEEDS IS A GREAT TASK AND IT TAKES A GREAT TEACHER TO STEP UP AND FILL
THOSE SHOES. ITS IMPORTANT THAT THESE STUDENTS ARE TREATED AS
INDIVIDUALS YET ALSO INCLUDED IN SOCIALIZING AND LEARNING WITH THE
REST OF THE CLASS. I NEVER REALIZED HOW MUCH ALL STUDENTS JUST WISH
TO BE TREATED THE SAME, WITH LOVE AND RESPECT. AS AN EDUCATOR, YOU
DO GROW TO FEEL A PROTECTION OVER YOUR STUDENTS AND YOU WISH
NOTHING MORE THAN FOR THEM TO SUCCEED. THESE CHILDRENS FUTURES
DEPEND ON THE AMOUNT OF EFFORT WE ARE WILLING TO PUT FORTH.
THROUGH TECHNOLOGY AND COLLABORATION WE ARE ABLE TO HELP THE
BLIND TO SEE, THE DEAF TO HEAR, AND THE PHYSICALLY DISABLED TO WALK.
WE CAN TAKE OUR STUDENTS ON SO MANY ADVENTURES. JUST BY
INTRODUCING THEM TO THE WORLD OF READING AND LITERATURE. BY GIVING
THIS GIFT TO OUR STUDENTS, WE ARE OPENING THEIR EYES TO A WORLD
THEY HAVE NEVER AND MAY NEVER SEE. THANKS TO INVENTIONS SUCH AS
BRAILLE, ASL, HEARING AIDS, GLASSES, WALKING DEVICES, WHEELCHAIRS,
LARGE PRINT BOOKS, AND MANY MORE, OUR CHILDREN HAVE THE ABILITY TO
GAIN GREATER VOCABULARY AND COMPREHENSION SKILLS. THROUGH
COLLABORATION WE CAN PREPARE OUR EXCEPTIONAL LEARNERS FOR LIFE
AFTER SCHOOL AND CREATE A DESIRABLE FUTURE FOR THESE STUDENTS.
