Fractions Unit: Sixth Grade

This unit consists of five lessons on fractions:

Estimating Fractions
Multiplying Fractions and Whole Numbers
Multiplying Fractions
Multiplying Mixed Numbers
Divide Whole Numbers By Fractions

At the end of the lesson, students will be responsible for creating a lesson for
the classroom using two different forms of technology that they have learned
throughout the unit and class. One form of technology will be a presentation
and most students will use PowerPoint. Students have access to laptops and
tablets in the classroom and if needed, may use other forms that they have
brought on their own. The presentation will be graded according to a rubric
and can be on anything the choose explaining something about fractions.

Group Work
Utilize Methods, Media, and Materials

The Fractions video will be used as an introduction into the unit. This is the
first lesson and therefore the anticipatory set is used to grab the attention of
the learner. The document camera is used to be able to display the teachers
lessons and problems for the entire class to see. The textbook is used for inclass work. The conversation on fractions is a code that they scan off of my
weebly website in order to talk and communicate with each other in an
organized fashion. The students will have times where there is teaching,
group work, and partner share.

Require Learner Participation

The Fractions, Fractions, Fractions video will be shown to start the lesson off.
It is used as the hook.
Students will then open book and follow along as teacher reviews vocabulary
(Commutative property, dimensional analysis, reciprocals, and unit ratios).
Students will then turn to a partner to discuss each vocabulary word and
their meaning.
Students will then work in groups to do some practice normal math
estimation problems and some normal addition and subtraction of fractions.
Once students have a firm reminder about each, they will then work as a
class to figure out a word problem estimating fractions. After it is figured out,
Students will get tablets and scan code to join the conversation on fractions
(off teachers weebly). They will work with their partner and communicate via
conversation to ask and answer questions they teacher or other students
pose.
Closing: Students will randomly be asked questions about estimating
fractions or something new they learned.
Evaluate and Revise
Students will be responsible for obtaining information and asking questions
about fractions. It will be part of a group presentation where they will be
required to present on a specific problem using multiple forms of solving
fractions and implementing multimedia into their presentation.

PowerPoint Presentation (Will be reviewed with students)

Students will view the Zaption made for them and will be walked
through how it was made to be able to use it for their presentation if
they so desire
The projector is used to make the presentation visible to all students
Students will work in partners to check for understanding
Students will use whiteboards to allow the teacher to do formative
assessment
Require Learner Participation

Students will view a PowerPoint presentation while the teacher is

walking through problems on the board in order to be able to
understand what the teacher is asking them to do.
Teacher will show Zaption presentation at the end of the lesson and will
be walk through how to make presentation
The students will then be given whiteboards and practice problems.
They will do the problems and then be able to talk with their partner.
The teacher will ask to see the problems and the students will show the
teacher. The teacher will randomly select students to do the problems
in front of the class
For a closure, the teacher will ask the students to write down one way
they can connect this lesson to the project they will be asked to do.
Evaluate and Revise

about fractions. It will be part of a group presentation where they will be

Whiteboard
Prezi Presentation
Utilize Methods, Media, and Materials

Students will be brought up to the front of the classroom in order to

explain what it means to multiply fractions
The whiteboard will be used so the students can write down what they
are seeing as they are doing the problems
The Prezi presentation is used to reinforce what they learn about
fractions as well as implementing another tool they can use for the end
project for the unit.
Require Learner Participation

To allow students to understand what it means to multiply fractions,

students will be brought up to the front of the classroom and placed in
groups.
Students will be asked to multiply their group by a half and a fourth in
order to understand the concept of multiplication

As the students are doing that, other students will be working out the
problem that they are doing on the board. This connects all different
realms of learning styles
Students will then watch a Prezi presentation with the ability to learn
about Prezi and how it can be connected into different styles of
learning
Evaluate and Revise

Students will be responsible for obtaining information and asking questions

about fractions. It will be part of a group presentation where they will be
required to present on a specific problem using multiple forms of solving
fractions and implementing multimedia into their presentation.

numbers and give a visual of how it works
The whiteboards will be used to work out problems
Require Learner Participation

Students will use TodaysMeet in order to give questions and answer

questions
It will also be a tool they can use in order to give out on their
cumulative assignment

Students will watch as teacher pours sand in bottles/cups in order to

show what it means to multiply mixed numbers
Students will work out problems on whiteboards with teachers help
