Global Health Agency Introduction

Nurs464- Developing Case Management Skills

FEMA Presentation
Purpose of Assignment
Choose a Global Health Agency/Organization and identify a global health
problem that it is currently focusing on, which has an impact on the health of vulnerable
populations (i.e. women, children, elderly, disabled). Create a 10-12 slide PowerPoint
presentation that includes the following:
1. Identify the chosen Global Health Agency.
2. Identify the global health problem.
3. Identify which vulnerable population is affected.
4. Provide historical information related to WHY this is such a problem, and WHERE
it exists as a problem (i.e. which country/environment).
5. Describe what this agency is doing to help solve this problem and help those affected
by this problem (i.e. current campaigns or initiatives).

Approach to Assignment
Nurs464 contained many group projects. Our group chose to do our first
assignment on disaster preparedness followed by FEMA (Federal Emergency
Management Agency) and its role in disaster preparedness. The rubric was divided
amongst the group and submitted to the group leader for final preparation before our
assignment was presented to the class.
Reason for Inclusion
In identifying a Global Agency/Organization that spans the world, we chose to do
FEMA. Before this assignment, our group did not realize how FEMA regions were
divided to provide coverage over a large area. For the most part, FEMAs efforts are
concentrated within the United States, but there is one division called the International
Affairs Division that collaborates with agencies around the world to prepare for disasters
by learning from one another. This Federal group receives hundreds of international
visitors from around the world to train, yearly.
Communication
o Produces clear, accurate, and relevant writing using correct grammar,
spelling and punctuation

This assignment was a group project that the entire team

collaborated on to produce as we ensured that the message was
clear, accurate, and relevant. The final product was free of
grammatical, spelling and punctuation errors before it was
submitted for grading.

Teaching
o Provides relevant and sensitive health education information and
counseling to patients, and families, in a variety of situations and settings

Within the communities, nurses play an important role in disaster

preparedness. They may have a role working with FEMA or within
organizations such as the American Red Cross, Medical Reserve
Corps, National Disaster Medical System, and Community
Emergency Response Team. During a disaster, there is a response
phase in which nurses are called upon to provide medical treatment
for the injured as well as triage within hospitals or in the field.

o Uses information technologies and other appropriate methods to enhance

ones own knowledge base

Through researching the official website for FEMA, my group was

able to produce a PowerPoint presentation that was filled with
useful information for nurses in regards to their role in the four
stages of disaster preparedness. Nurses can be active members in
the prevention (evacuation), preparedness, response and recovery
phase of a disaster within the community, as well as the hospital
setting. After some health care lessons were learned from
Hurricane Katrina, my group felt researching the role of the nurse
during a natural disaster would be beneficial to know, as well as
the fact that Hampton Roads has an inherit risk for hurricanes
because of our close proximately to the ocean.

Research
o Shares research findings with colleagues

This was a group project that was divided amongst our class. Each
student was given an area to research and report his or her finding
back to the group. For the most part, our group obtained their
researched material from the official government site for FEMA.
We then prepared a presentation that we were able to share with
our colleagues.
