Section Four

Alignment to Curriculum & Professional Standard

Introduction
This section of the portfolio project is valuable because is justifies the ten artifacts Ive
included in relation to curriculum standards, professional standards as well as standards for
students and technology. The justification of artifacts can be very important in showing
interviewers, colleagues, as well as administration. Teachers are constantly asked for the ends to
the means and creating a chart with standards demonstrates the necessary skills in not only find
the curriculum standards but attach them to the specific content. From classroom management to
creating assessments, we as educators, need to know why were doing these things. The more
familiar we become with these documents, the more they will become second nature. As a result
of this, we will be able to develop more both professionally and personally as we get to know the
curriculum and other stands as if theyre common knowledge.
This section will specifically identify the following standards in relation to the ten
artifacts shown above:
INTASC These standards establish clear and concise directives for teachers and educators to
ensure learning and professionalism throughout instruction. These standards follow four main
headings: The Learner and Learning, Content Knowledge, Instructional Practice and Professional
Responsibility. Each of these four headings is followed by more specific sub-standards which
allow the educator to grasp four major concepts in instructing education.

New York State Code of Ethics Standards for Educators This domain specific area ensures
that all educators in New York State are ethically pursuing and implementing their practice
throughout their tenure in education. These standards ensure professionalism from the instructor
as well as culturally diverse and responsive teaching.

NYS P-12 Common Core Learning Standards/ NYS Learning Standards These standards
were implemented by the State of New York as a bench mark and referencing document for
educators within the state. These documents provide valuable insight to educators, students and
parents as to the expectations of where the student should be academically throughout a semester
or calendar year. The intention of these documents is to ensure all students are learning valuable
content and that all educators within the state are instruction age and content appropriate
material.
TEAC Claims These standards implemented by Medaille College are set out to ensure that
they are providing the educational workforce with knowledgeable, professional and caring
instructors. Medaille requires that teacher candidates are proficient in all three competencies and
creates their standards through detailed claims created by the college.
ISTE Standards for Teachers and/or Students These standards are technological standards
set out to ensure instructors and educators are always adhering to professional and personal
commitments by producing and creating useful, appropriate and safe material for both colleagues
and students. These technological standards are very useful, especially in an era where
technology is becoming more prominent within the classroom.
CEC Standards The CEC Standards are standards created for exceptional students. These
standards ensure that all educators are taking students with exceptionalities into account and help

in promoting a culturally diverse school community. These standards provide education for all
students and can be paralleled with IEPs, 504s and movements such as No Child Left Behind.
Ontario Curriculum Standards These standards are set out by the Ontario government to
ensure that all students are learning the same content at age appropriate times and to ensure that
teachers have an educational framework to use throughout instruction. The Ontario curriculum
provides educators with subject specific content and expectations while at the same time
allowing for creative freedom. The goal of the educator is to have each student meet or exceed
the specific expectations within the curriculum document to ensure progress and content
knowledge to proceed to the next grade.

In the attached chart below, Ive related the ten artifacts within my portfolio to these standards.
The standards are very useful in ensuring a professional and knowledgeable check of all content
and materials throughout the presentation of lessons and instructions.

Conclusion
This section demonstrates the standards that align with each artifact. The standards
represent both New York State and Ontario professional and technological expectations, as well
as align with Medaille College TEAC Claims among others. Justification through standards is an
important measure for teachers to take to not only self-check to make sure theyre on task but
also to justify learning objectives and outcomes to colleagues, parents and administration. These
standards are valuable to continue to follow to ensure that educators are remaining professional,
while being caring and knowledgeable teachers as well.
