ThiscodearisesfromreorderandexpandthesetofsymbolsandcharactersalreadyusedintelegraphyatthattimebytheBellcompany.
Atfirstonlyincludedcapitallettersandnumbers,butin1967wasaddedthelowercaselettersandsomecontrolcharacters,formingwhatisknownas
USASCII,iethecharacters0through127.
Sowiththissetofonly128characterswaspublishedin1967asstandard,containingallyouneedtowriteinEnglishlanguage.
In1981,IBMdevelopedanextensionof8bitASCIIcode,called"codepage437",inthisversionwerereplacedsomeobsoletecontrolcharactersfor
graphiccharacters.Also128characterswereadded,withnewsymbols,signs,graphicsandlatinletters,allpunctuationsignsandcharactersneededto
writetextsinotherlanguages,suchasSpanish.
InthiswaywasaddedtheASCIIcharactersrangingfrom128to255.
IBMincludessupportforthiscodepageinthehardwareofitsmodel5150,knownas"IBMPC",consideredthefirstpersonalcomputer.
Theoperatingsystemofthismodel,the"MSDOS"alsousedthisextendedASCIIcode.
