Define the following:

1. Distributed Database (DDB) A logically interrelated collection of shared data (and a


description of this data), physically distributed over a computer network.
2. Horizontal Fragmentation Consist of a subset of the tuples of a relation.
3. Data Fragmentation allows you to break a single object into two or more segments or
fragments.
4. Mixed (Hybrid) Fragmentation Consist of a horizontal fragment that is subsequently
vertically fragmented, or a vertical fragment that is then horizontally fragmented.
5. Fragmentation Schema a description of how the data is to be logically partitioned.
6. Data Replication the process of generating and reproducing multiple copies of data at one
or more sites.
7. Data Distribution - what values a variable takes and how often it takes these values.
8. Distributed Concurrency Control - the concurrency control of a system distributed over a
computer network
9. Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) - provides a common interface for accessing
heterogeneous SQL databases. ODBC is based on SQL as a standard for accessing data.
10. Application Program Interface (API) by providing all the necessary building blocks, it is
easier to develop a program; specific method prescribed by a computer operating system or by
an application program by which a programmer writing an appliacation program can make
requests of the operating system or another application.
