The national flag of France is a tricolor flag featuring three equal vertical stripes: reflex blue

(hoist side), safe white and red 032. These colors were adopted by Valry Giscard d'Estaing,
replacing the previous darker version of the flag. The equal width of the bands was settled by
Napoleon, but in 17th May 1853, the French Navy went back to the old version of proportions
(30:33:37), which are still in use today.

There are several symbols associated to the three colors, one of them is connected to the 1789
Revolution when the militia wore initially blue and red cockades on their hats, then white being
added to them as it was representing, according to Lafayette the ancient French colour.
