The flag of Italy, referred in Italian as il tricolore or la bandiera dItalia, consists of three equal
vertical bands: fern green (hoist side), bright white and flame scarlet. Its current form has been
adopted on the 1st of January 1948.

The colors symbolize different concepts; the most common is that the green represents Italys
beautiful landscapes, the white the majestic Alps, and the red the blood shed for the countrys
independence. Others connect the three colours to the three theological virtues: green for hope,
white for faith, and red, the charity.
There is a similarity of appearance between la bandiera and Mexicos national flag, but they
can still be differentiated because the last one has more darker shades of green and red, has a
coats of arms positioned over the white band, and its proportions are 4:7 therefore a more
elongated rectangular shape.
