PRACTICE PLAN
I am proud of offering instrumental music classes that are both challenging and fun. Although BAND and
GUITAR are electives, you should know that there is a rigorous curriculum which is driven by state and
national standards for music education. Home practice is the key to success. Students are expected to
bring their instruments home to practice.
Most assessments in Band and Guitar class are performance-based. Students are asked to demonstrate
their mastery of basic skills and their understanding of how to read music notation. They receive
instruction on how to practice for success. The lessons are sequential, pacing is appropriate and they
have sufficient time to prepare for each assessment. As part of the assessment process, students are
asked to use their iPads to record themselves at home. This engages students in a stress-free way of
showing their best effort, as well as being an excellent tool for self-evaluation. Its also fun!
Although some students make excuses for not practicing (too much other homework, after school
sports, etc.), they need to learn to budget their time so they have enough time for practicing. Students are
encouraged to develop a PRACTICE PLAN, where they make time for practicing as part of their weekly
schedule. Learning to manage their time helps students become successful in everything they do!
I am asking for your support at home by helping your student develop a practice plan. Encouraging
them to practice often will ensure their success in band or guitar class. The groups success depends on
the contribution of every individual. Remember, the goal is PROGRESS, not perfection.
