Standard 10: Leadership and Collaboration

The teacher seeks appropriate leadership roles and opportunities to

take responsibility for student learning, to collaborate with learners, families,
colleagues, other school professionals and community members to ensure
learner growth, and to advance the profession.
Artifact 2 email with invite and pictures from a field trip with my French in
the Americas class and an email from a French teacher on the Gulf Coast.
Class: FRE 641
National Standards for Foreign Language Learning: 2.1, 2.2, 3.1, 3.2, 4.1, 4.2,
5.1, 5.2
As an example of my understanding of Standard 10, I included several
artifacts. One of them was an email with the details of a field trip my French
in the Americas class was going to on the Gulf Coast. It was a requirement
for the class that met on campus every week but not for those of us who
were taking the class online. Nevertheless I was invited to join them and
though it was not a requirement for me, I thought it would be a neat learning
experience. I did not realize there was so much French history right here in
Biloxi, Mississippi.
As part of the field trip, we attended a talk about the history of Biloxi at
the Biloxi visitors center. We then visited a construction site right next to
the museum that at one point was a burial plot for many French people. A
park is being built or may already be completed by now on that site since
this field trip was nine months ago. We visited the small museum inside of
the center and after that we had lunch at the Vietnamese Bakery- Le Bakery.
Though I was not the instructor of this class, I believe this artifact
demonstrates my understanding of this standard because I showed that I
wanted to learn more about the French history and I made connections with
other people on the coast who are interested in French history and know so
much about it.
Another artifact that I have included is an email from a French teacher
that works at a local high school on the coast. He was my sons French
teacher last year and I contacted him to ask if he knew of any French
speaking meet ups here on the coast like they do in New Orleans. I also
asked him if he would be interested in coming to one if we were able to
coordinate a meeting. We are now in the process of setting up those
meetings where francophones can meet to practice their French. He also
wants to create a French club at the school where he teaches and some of
his students may also come to the meet-ups. My plan is contact as many
French teachers on the Coast to try to spark interest in these meet-ups so
that we can improve our French and create awareness of the French
language and culture here on the Gulf Coast.
