The ABCs

of 5th Grade: Welcome!

This handbook contains vital information that will help you throughout the year. Please keep it handy and
dont hesitate to see a fifth grade teacher if you have any questions.

A
rrival:

School begins promptly at 7:55. Please have your child at school by first bell at 7:40 so your child can take
care of their morning routine. If your child will be eating breakfast at school, they need to arrive between
7:15 and 7:30 and report to the cafeteria. Students who arrive after 7:55 MUST be signed in at the office.

A
ttendance:

It is very important that your child be at school everyday.


If
your child must be absent, please send in a

written excuse the day he/she returns to school.


Emails are not accepted

as excuses. Reasons for


absences must be recorded in the school attendance records. Please notify your childs teacher in the event
of extended absences. If your child is absent for 3 consecutive days please contact the school, otherwise the
school is required to contact you.
Please make doctor/dentist after school if possible.

reakfast:

Hesse Elementary serves


FREE breakfast
each morning from 7:15-7:40. Be sure that your child has a
nutritious breakfast each morning. It is hard to work and concentrate when you are hungry.

ullying:

Will not be tolerated. These behaviors are grounds for suspension and expulsion. This includes cyber-bullying,
verbal bullying, and physical bullying.

ojo:

Student behavior will be tracked on Class Dojo. Please sign up through your homeroom teachers account.
Reminders for homework, class events, daily behavior, etc will be sent through Class Dojo after you sign up.

If at anytime you feel a need for a conference, please

one.

ismissal:

Fifth grade will begin dismissing at

ress:
UNIFORM POLICY:

* Tops: hunter green or white polo style shirt


* Bottoms: Khaki or navy blue shorts, jumpers, skorts, skirts, or pants. All bottoms must be long enough to
touch your finger tips when your hands are by your side. NO LEGGINGS.
* Undershirts: Any shirt worn under the uniform should be solid white with no words, pictures, logos, etc.
* Socks:
Solid color
- preferably white; socks must match; only one pair of socks may be worn at a time.
* Shoes must be enclosed and tied or fastened.
NO backless shoes or
sandals
.
* Shirts must be tucked in. Pants must be
at waist
.
*
Belts,in plain brown or black, must be worn
if belt loops are on pants.
* Outerwear: must button or zip; no pullovers; solid school color only if it is worn in class

E
lectronics:

Students must turn all cell phones and other electronic devices in to the teacher during homeroom. If there
is an assignment that allows an e-reader, the student will be able to retrieve it for that period only. If you
share an account with your child, please be mindful of the material that can be accessed on the device.

mergencies:

We ask that all parents leave telephone numbers in case of emergency or illness.
Please let the school know
when there is a change of address/phone number
(work or home). WE MUST ME ABLE TO REACH YOU AT
ALL TIMES IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY!

xpectations:

You can expect that we will provide a safe, positive, and caring educational environment for your child. We
expect our students to come to school prepared, ready, and willing to learn. Also, we expect parents to take
an active role in their childs education.

rips:

Field trips are important part of our curriculum. We will take field trips throughout the year. Our trips are
centered on the fifth grade curriculum. We will send information about field trips as they are planned.

reen Communication Folders:

Each Friday, your childs


green communication folder
will be sent home. Inside of the folder you will find a
record of your childs behavior from the previous week. Please sign this report
weekly
.

H
omework:

Students will have homework that is expected to be at school


each day
. In order for your child to be
prepared each day, they must complete the homework each night. Please establish a daily homework routine
for your child. When your child is absent, ONE extra day will be allowed for each day absent to make up the
homework assignment.

I
nternet
:

We will use the Internet often to research and explore different topics.
Also, keep an eye on our fifth grade

website: hesse5.weebly.com .

J
ewelry:

Please leave all valuable jewelry at home. We do not want it getting lost or broken! NO large earrings,
suspenders, ties, bandanas, or other elaborate accessories may be worn.

indness:

We expect each child to respect one another and treat each other with kindness. Bullying will not be
tolerated.

anguage
A
rts:

Language Arts includes: writing, spelling, and grammar.

L
unch:

The student lunch will cost $2.25; reduced lunch will cost $0.40. Please make sure you keep your childs lunch
account up to date. To add money to your account, please visit

M
ath:

Our county follows the Common Core Math Curriculum. We will participate in a variety of real life, hands-on
activities that will help children build their own understanding of math. We will be working on multiplication,
division, order of operations, geometry, decimals, fractions, and measurement. Please make sure to practice
basic multiplication and division facts at home via the computer, flashcards, or any method that works for
your child.

M
oney:

There will be times throughout the year that we will need to collect money for lunch/breakfast, field trips,
book orders, pictures, etc
Please send all money in a SEALED ENVELOPE inside your childs GREEN
COMMUNICATION FOLDER. Please include your childs first & last name and the amount enclosed.

ewsletter:

A newsletter will be sent out weekly. This newsletter will inform you of classroom and school news. This
information will also be available on our fifth grade website.

O
utside Time:

We will have outside recess time everyday (weather permitting). This gives the brain time to store
information into long term memory. This time will consist of structured and unstructured physical activities.
Unfortunately, if your child does not complete their homework at home, they will be expected to use this
outside time to complete it.

P
E:

On the days your child has PE they must wear tennis shoes to school
. Please see our specials schedule
(will be listed on the website as soon as we receive it). Any child without appropriate shoes or dress will not
be permitted to participate.

rogress Reports:

Your child will receive a progress report every 4 weeks and/or I will contact you personally concerning your
childs progress. You are also more than welcome to send a note or call if you have any questions.

in case it ends up in Junk Mail. Please allow us
a 48 hour response time.

R
eport Card:

Your child will receive a report card every nine weeks. You are
required to sign the report card and send it
back
to school. Please return the signed report card the next day if possible. Once I receive the signed
copy, I will send home your copy to keep.

R
esource Classes:

The resource classes include: Art, Music/Band, P.E, and Spanish. Your child will attend a resource each day of
the week. Some resources may be repeated due to the abundant student population. Please make sure that
your child
wears tennis shoes for P.E. class
. I will add the resource schedule onto the class newsletter the
first few weeks. Also, we will utilize the computer lab and laptops as much as possible.

S
afety Patrol:

Every quarter the fifth grade teachers will choose 2 students from each class to be a part of Hesse Safety Patrol.
These students will assist the lower elementary students from the car ramp to class each morning. Students are
awarded this position based on behavior and effort.

upplies:

Please make sure that your child attends school with the necessary supplies. A 5
grade supply list is listed on
our website and a copy was sent home at Open House. There will be times that we will request special items
for certain projects. If you cannot financially fulfill these requests, please let me know
as soon as possible.

T
ardiness:

School begins at 7:55 every day. Any student who arrives after 7:55 will be marked tardy.
If your child
arrives after 7:55, you MUST sign them in at the office.A late student will not be permitted to class
without a tardy slip. Please read carefully the attendance policy in the Code of Conduct handbook.

olunteers:

We
WELCOME
parent involvement and participation. Please contact us if you can be a
volunteer
in our class.
We enjoy visitors in our school and our classrooms. Please make sure that you
sign in at the office and put
on a visitors tag
before coming to the class.

isitors:

If you would like to visit your childs classroom, you


must call or email to schedule an appointment
.
Unannounced visitors are very distracting for both students and the teachers and will not be allowed in the
room. If you have a scheduled appointment, you MUST sign in at the office first and wear your visitor
sticker.

W
ater:

Water is a must!
The brain must be hydrated in order to learn. Each student will be allowed to keep a water
bottle WITH A LID in the classroom, but be sure it stays
clean
.
