Paper 1 is due Friday, July 24 by 11:59 PM through Safe Assignment in Blackboard.
After reading Pamela Grundys Learning to Win: Sports, Education, and Social Change in Twentieth-Century North Carolina, write a 4-6 page paper in response to the following prompt: In the epilogue, Grundy emphasizes the connections between athletics and the dynamic process by which North Caroliniansand Americans in generalhave made and remade their social institutions and themselves. She continues, A century of athletic endeavor charts a complex web of interactions, illuminating the many ways that sports have both reflected and influenced the society surrounding them (Grundy, 295-296). How did sports both reflect and influence North Carolinian society from the late nineteenth century to the 1970s? Select three historical moments from the book and explain how athletic events provide a window into society in each historical period. *In your paper, assert a thesis and support it with evidence from the book. Your paper should also discuss ideas concerning gender, race, and class. Rather than trying to include every topic presented in the book, select your three moments (or events) and analyze them well. Formatting The essay should be typed, with one-inch margins, in Times New Roman 12-point font, doublespaced, and 4-6 pages. A heading (single-spaced) should include the assignment description, your name, and the date. A title should also appear on the first page. Finally, the pages should be numbered. Citations Internal citations should be used and should include the last name of the author and the page number (see example above). Do not use block quotations because this is a short paper. Quotations should be no longer than 3 lines or 1-2 sentences. Citations are required when ideas are paraphrased as well as when sentences are quoted directly. If you find you are paraphrasing a lot, which is fine, you may use a mass citation at the end of the paragraph to cover the entire paragraph. [Example: (Grundy, 45-49, 62, 93).] There is no need for a Works Cited page because there is no need to use additional sources. Grading Rubric Total Points: 300, broken into 3 components 1. Analysis (120 points): paper is argument-driven, with an explicit thesis present, and includes analysis and critical thinking 2. Content (120 points): all questions answered/all components of question addressed, paper includes specific facts and information from the source to support arguments 3. Presentation (60 points): grammar and spelling, sentence structure and paragraph structure, writing style
