Math

This week we reviewed place value of whole numbers to the millions place

and place value of decimals to the thousandths place. Students worked on ordering
and comparing whole numbers and decimals. Today we worked on looking for a pattern
in word problems. We will review the unit on Monday and Tuesday will be the test!
Our next unit is on adding and subtracting whole numbers and decimals.

ReadingOur story next week is Thunder Rose which is a tall tale. Students will
practice the reading skill of cause and effect. Reminder: the only reading homework
we have each week is a skill/vocab worksheet on Wednesdays. Students should be
reading outside school as well. I just dont require that they log it.

Grammar

Our grammar skill next week is identifying irregular and regular

plural nouns. We will discuss rules for making nouns plural and work on memorizing
irregular plural nouns.

Writing

Next week we are beginning our first writing genre. Students will

write a tall tale. Our reading story Thunder Rose will help us learn the characteristics of a tall tale and we will pull from resources such as Johnny Appleseed, Paul Bunyan, etc.

Spelling-

Our list focuses on words with long vowel sounds. Students take their

pretest on Tuesday and can be finished for the week if they score an A. Visit
www.spellingcity.com/triton5 to access the lists, games, and practice tests.

Social Studies

We have been reviewing the continents and oceans of the

world. Students learned how to read and find latitude and longitude on maps. Next
week we will spend time exploring the regions of the U.S. and characteristics of
each. Then we will review for our unit test over map skills, latitude and longitude,
landforms, and regions of the U.S.

Science-We have begun our first unit which is on how scientists work. We will
be engaging in the Scientific Method through hands-on investigations and online interactive lessons.

Note From the Teacher:

Scholastic book orders and money are due next Friday, August 28. Attached to the book
orders was a paper explaining how to access the Scholastic book order online. Take advantage of this great program..think about Christmas presents! You can access the
book order at www.scholastic.com/readingclub. The class code is GMMCB.
If you notice graded homework coming home with make corrections at the top of it,
its because that assignment received a low enough score to be a D or F. For any assignment that is failing (D or F) students have the opportunity to make corrections and turn
that assignment back in the next day . The assignment will be re=graded and then the
score will be averaged. This will help students save valuable points and correct mistakes
they are making on their work.
