CAUSATION

. CONCEPT OF CAUSATION

A. DEFINITION
it is a relationship between cause and effects.
the act or process of causing something to
happen or exist.
The relationship between an event or situation
and a possible reason or cause.

B. PRINCIPLE
The cause includes all the essential factors present in
the cause and effect relationship, not merely one if
there are others as well.
The cause of an event or a condition can be found
only in the essential factors, the indispensable
antecedents of the event or the condition.
The fact that one event follows another does not
mean that the first cause the second.
The cause must not be confused with the inciting
event.

C. SOCIAL EFFECTS OF CAUSE

AND EFFECTS

Diffusion or Imitation of Treatment

Compensatory Rivalry
Demoralization and Resentment
Compensatory Equalization of Treatment

II. HOW TO TEST THE VALUE OF

ANALYSIS OF CAUSATION

The cause must be inclusive; it must name all

factors essential to the occurrence of the effect.
It must be restricted to the essential and
indispensable antecedents of the effect. It most
not be expanded to include irrelevant and
tangential circumstantial details.
The necessity of the occurrence of an effect after
a cause and not a mere sequence in time
determines a cause.
Inciting events are insufficient explanations of a
cause and effect relationship.

III.MODEL TECHNICAL
WRITER

Bird Causation Model

The model above is a simplified reflection of the real life situation but powerful for communication
purposes: it relates the management system to the event and the results thereof, either good or bad,
depending on the quality of each link in the system. It indicates three cause levels: direct causes,
basic causes and the management system. This model is widely accepted in business including such
areas as safety, quality, environment.
