Hookes law experiment

When a spider falls on its web, the web will oscillate. Diagram (a) shows a small spider oscillating on its web
with a small displacement from its original position. Diagram (b) shows a bigger spider oscillating on its web
with greater displacement from its original position.

Arrangement of apparatus:

Procedures: 1.

The spring is hung to a retort stand and a pointer is fixed at the end of the spring.

2.

The scale reading of the initial position of the pin, l0 is recorded when no weight was
attached to the spring.

3.

A load of 50 g is suspended at the end of the spring and the corresponding scale reading
of the new position of the pin, l is recorded.

3.

The extension of the spring is calculated by using the equation x = l - lo.

4.

The experiment is repeated using loads of 100g, 150g, 200g and 250g.

5.

The result is tabulated and a graph of extension, x against force, F is plotted.

Tabulation of data:
lo = __________ cm
Mass, m/g

Force, F/N Corresponding scale reading, l/ cm
