School (FAMU DRS) is to conduct research, demonstration, and

Organization Description and Purpose:

Florida Future Business Leaders of America at


Florida A & M University Developmental Research School
All Career and Technical Education students are strongly encouraged to join the FAMU DRS chapter of Future
Business Leaders of America (FBLA). The purpose/mission of FBLA is to provide, as an integral part of the
instructional program, additional opportunities for students in grades 6-12 to develop vocational and career
supportive competencies and to promote civic and personal responsibility. FBLA is designed to give middle and
high school students practical and technical business-related experiences. The organization helps students
develop various business-related skills essential in their future. Students will participate in FBLA competitions;
competitions are held at the district, state, and national levels. These competencies highlight the skills of FBLA
members throughout the district, state, and nation as well as provide numerous networking opportunities.
High School FBLA Chapter Meetings: Every Tuesday, 7:45 am 8:15 am (unless otherwise noted)
Middle School FBLA Chapter Meetings: Every Thursday, 7:45 am 8:15 am (unless otherwise noted)
FBLA Dues: $35 (includes chapter, district, state, and national dues for the current school year)

HOMEWORK POLICY
Homework assignments are to be submitted no later than the due date specified by Ms. Claitt
THIS INCLUDES IF THERE IS A SUBSTITUTE ON THE DUE DATE. Please refer to the
Late/Missed Assignments section of the policy regarding any missed or late homework assignments.
Homework will be submitted in an orderly and efficient manner. For written and electronically
submitted assignments, students must have the proper heading in the top right-hand section of each
page of their assignment (unless otherwise noted). NO OTHER INFORMATION may be submitted
with or on your homework (for example: doodles, football numbers, basketball numbers, the names of
friends, personal quotes, various artists names, et cetera). The information, as with everything submitted,
must be neat and organized and as specified by the instructor. Always remember that your work
represents you. Do not place homework in plastic sheet protectors unless otherwise noted. Please

remember, all homework must be submitted before the tardy bell rings or before last call for
homework and must be labeled correctly. Work not properly submitted will not be accepted.

LATE/MISSED ASSIGNMENT POLICY


Late/Missed Assignments (without an excused admit): If a student does not submit an assignment on
or before the specified due date and time, the student will receive a grade of zero (0%).
Late/Missed Assignments (with an excused admit): When stipulating the time-frame acceptable to
make-up assignments, those students with an excused admit will have the same number of days, equal
to those days absent, to submit the missed assignment. That is, if a student is absent three (3) days
with an excused admit, he/she will have three (3) days (including weekends) to submit those
missed assignments. It is the responsibility of the STUDENT to ask for any missed assignments
or notes. It is also the responsibility of the STUDENT to ask for any clarification and/or
additional instruction. Excused admits must be presented the day a student returns to class.
Excused admits not presented the day a student returns to class will NOT afford that student
additional time to make up work.

GRADING CRITERIA SPECIAL NOTES


Participation grades will be awarded for specified class discussions and class activities and
weighted as an in-class assignment/classwork and/or a quiz grade depending upon the
discussion and/or activity. Students who are off task or behave disruptively during
instructional time will lose participation points for that day. The number of lost participation
points will depend upon the circumstance.

Students who are tardy (unexcused), late (unexcused), off task, talking, or behaving disruptively
during bell ringer time will receive an automatic zero for that days bell ringer.

BEHAVIORAL EXPECTATIONS & CLASSROOM PROCEDURES


1. RESPECT. Students will respect themselves, their teacher, their classmates/peers, classroom guests, other peoples
property, and the school equipment/property. Also, when the teacher and other classmates are talking/presenting, everyone else
will be QUIET and ATTENTIVE. In addition, cell phones are NOT permissible in the classroom. If you have them, they
must be TURNED OFF and out of sight.* *Refer to Student Handbook.

2. HALL PASSES. Students will NOT receive passes to leave the classroom. Personal needs (bathroom, water fountain, et
cetera) must be taken car of/completed before or after class (exceptions with documentation will be dealt with on an
individual basis). Passes to lockers will NOT be given no exceptions.

3. PROMPTNESS. Tardiness will not be tolerated in any Career and Technical Education Course/Program. If a student is
less than five minutes late, he/she must sign the tardy log, will receive a zero for the days bell ringer, and will participate in a
parent-teacher conference if more than three tardies are earned. If the class has been in session for five minutes or longer, an
absence or tardy admit must be obtained; students may NOT enter class without an excused admit from the FAMU DRS
Attendance Office or Office of the Dean of Students in this instance. Also, please note that accumulated unexcused tardies turn
into unexcused absences which may, in turn, affect your grade in this course (automatic failure clause).

4. TIDINESS. No trash will be left lying around the room and all chairs will be pushed in at the end of the class period.
Stations will be set up as directed prior to leaving the classroom. Do your part to help keep the room looking as nice as possible.
Remember, the condition of our classroom is a reflection on you; therefore, leave the room clean and well organized.

5. APPEARANCE. Students must adhere to the schools uniform policy or the business attire dress code (for specified
business attire days) at all times. NO EXCEPTIONS. Any deviation from either policy or dress code will be viewed as a
violation and dealt with accordingly. Also, students may not have backpacks in the classroom; backpacks must be left in lockers.

6. NO FOOD OR BEVERAGES. Students may not bring any food, drink, or gum into the classroom. It does not
matter whether or not these items are sealed or contained; they should not be in view or consumed in the classroom.

7. NO HORSEPLAY. No running around, playing, fighting, or wrestling is allowed in the classroom. You break it,
you buy it.

8. REPRESENT. Students will always submit presentable work and present themselves in a professional manner at all
times. Remember that your work represents you. No torn, wrinkled, or dirty work will be` accepted. Anything with fringe or
anything that is written on or typed on the back of a piece of paper (unless otherwise noted by the instructor) will not be
gradedNO EXCEPTIONS. If something is submitted in handwritten form, scribbles and mark outs are unacceptable. Each
student is required to have a bottle of white out (or white out pens or strips) for this purpose. Also, all work must be completed
in black ink only. Again, remember, students are not allowed to share supplies.

9. NO CHEATING. Cheating will NOT be tolerated. After the first instance of cheating the student will receive a zero on
the assignment and further disciplinary action will be taken through the administration. After the second instance of cheating,
the student will receive a grade of F for the quarter. There is a ZERO TOLERANCE policy for cheating. Also, please
remember that plagiarism is considered cheating.

10. STIR IT UP. Every student has the ingredients for greatness. In this class we, the students, the parents, and the teacher,
stir them up to produce confident, successful, students. Ahhhhthe sweet smell of SUCCESS.

Lectures/Discussions/Activities
After completing our bell ringers/warm up activities, Ms. Claitt will engage students in the
days activities. During this time, there will be NO inappropriate talking, sleeping, or
disruptions tolerated during this time. This will be your opportunity to obtain valuable
knowledge and skills and should be taken seriously.
During this time, please remember the following:

1. Students

will NOT be given permission to leave the room for any reason (other than fire drills and extreme
emergencies). Ms. Claitt values each and every minute she is with her students because it is a time of learning and
growth; any disruptions which prohibit my students from learning and growing will not be tolerated.
Therefore, please do not ask for permission to leave the room; this includes, but is not limited to, permission to go
to the restroom (students have time before and after class to use the restroom and students may have a personal
box of Kleenex and hand sanitizer for illness and will therefore not have to go to the bathroom for that),
permission to go to another teachers classroom, or permission to go to lockers you will be told No.

2. Cell phone usage

is NOT permitted during class time (unless otherwise noted). Should


students have cell phones they must be TURNED OFF (not simply placed on vibrate or any other
alternative) and they must be kept out of sight. Parents please do not call your child on a cell phone
during the school day; should you need to contact a student please call the main office. Cell phones
are extremely disruptive to a classroom setting and will not be tolerated. Should a cell phone ring
during class the student will surrender the cell phone to Ms. Claitt (who will then give it to the principal),
will receive a referral, and may earn repercussions.

3. During announcements (PA system and other), stop all activities and sit quietly to listen.
or any other activities done at this time even if the announcement does not pertain to you.

4. Should we have guests to visit our classroom or should we visit another classroom or leave our classroom for
any reason, students will behave with decorum befitting a serious, professional student. Students will behave
professionally and appropriately and will exude pride and confidence. Please remember that a guest is anyone
other than the students enrolled in the class who enters our classroom.

5. Backpacks are not permitted in the classroom. Per the administrative policy, student backpacks must be kept
in their lockers. During class, students will NOT be allowed to return to lockers or backpacks.

6. Students will behave appropriately and intelligently at all times.

Students will follow


directions explicitly and efficiently. Students will understand that they are here to receive an education reflect that
understanding in through their behavior, actions, and ability to complete assigned tasks.

Dismissal
Please remember the bell/tone does not dismiss you. Ms. Claitt will attempt to provide students with 3
5 minutes to clean their areas and prepare for the next class. Students will not be allowed to leave the
classroom until their area is clean, their computers are shut down, and their chairs are pushed in. Students
will quietly remain in their seats until Ms. Claitt instructs them regarding their dismissal.

Parents

Please remember that I value every minute with my students. Please do not call or text students on cell
phones during class/instructional times. Should you need to speak to a student during class or leave
something for him/her, please contact the attendance or main office.

Dear Parent:
I am excited and enthused to have your child in my Reading for Success class this school
year. Through determination, excitement, hard work, and dedication, your child will gain
many rewarding experiences this year. Education is the key to success in life and I have
developed expectations and procedures your child should follow to ensure that he/she
leaves the class with acquired knowledge and skills. I also will provide an uplifting,
warm, atmosphere that is positive and comfortable to afford students the opportunity to
learn without any distractions. My philosophy is that ALL students can and will learn
when provided with a safe, nurturing, and knowledgeable environment. Everything in
my classroom is reflects my philosophy and belief.
My main objectives for this year are to 1. Keep abreast of new knowledge, 2.
Individualize instruction for a diverse population of students, 3. Help all students

Photo Release Form

This form confirms the agreement between you and FAMU DRS regarding your childs participation in FAMU DRS activities in
which your child may be photographed or videotaped (the Property) from time to time. For valuable consideration received, you
hereby irrevocably grant to FAMU DRS perpetually, exclusively, and for all media throughout the world (including print, nontheatrical, home video, CD-ROM, internet and any other electronic medium presently in existence or invented in the future), the
right to use and incorporate (alone or together with other materials), in whole or in part, photographs or video footage taken of
your child as a result of your childs participation in FAMU DRS courses and activities. You hereby agree that you will not bring
or consent to others bringing claim or action against FAMU DRS on the grounds that anything contained in the Property, or in
the advertising and publicity used in connection herewith, is defamatory, reflects adversely on you or your child, violates any other
right whatsoever, including, without limitation, rights of privacy and publicity. You hereby release FAMU DRS, its directors,
officers, successors, faculty, staff, affiliations, and assigns from and against any and all claims, demands, actions, causes of actions,
suits, costs, expenses, liabilities, and damages whatsoever that you may hereafter have against FAMU DRS in connection with the
Property. This agreement shall not obligate FAMU DRS to use the Property or to use any of the rights granted hereunder, or to
prepare, produce, exhibit, distribute or exploit the Property. FAMU DRS shall have the right to assign its rights hereunder,
without your consent, in whole or in part, to any person, firm or corporation.
That is, I hereby grant to FAMU DRS and its representatives, employees, agents and assigns, the irrevocable and unrestricted
right to use, reproduce and publish photographs of me, including my image and likeness as depicted therein and including my
name as depicted therein; to alter the same without restriction; and to copyright the same. I hereby release FAMU DRS and its
trustees, officers, employees, agents, legal representatives and assigns from any and all claims, actions and liability relating to its
use of said photographs and name.
In addition, I hereby irrevocably authorize the FAMU DRS to edit, alter, copy, exhibit, publish or distribute this photo for
purposes of publicizing the FAMU DRS programs or for any other lawful purpose. In addition, I waive the right to inspect or
approve the finished product, including written or electronic copy, wherein my likeness appears. Additionally, I waive any right to
royalties or other compensation arising or related to the use of the photograph. I hereby hold harmless and release and forever
discharge FAMU DRS from all claims, demands, and causes of action which I, my heirs, representatives, executors,
administrators, or any other persons acting on my behalf or on behalf of my estate have or may have by reason of this
authorization.

PROCEDURES

Lectures/Discussions/Activities
After completing our warm up activities (if applicable), Ms. Claitt will engage
students in the days activities. During this time, there will be NO inappropriate
talking, sleeping, or disruptions tolerated during this time. This will be your
opportunity to obtain valuable knowledge and skills and should be taken seriously.
During this time, please remember the following:
1. Students will NOT be given permission to leave the room for any reason (other than fire drills and extreme emergencies).

Ms. Claitt values each and every minute she is with her students because it is a time of learning and growth; any disruptions
which prohibit my students from learning and growing will not be tolerated. Therefore, please do not ask for permission to
leave the room; this includes, but is not limited to, permission to go to the bathroom (students may have their personal boxes
of Kleenex and hand sanitizer for illness and will therefore not have to go to the bathroom for that), permission to go to
another teachers classroom, or permission to go to lockers.

2. Cell phones are NOT permitted in this classroom AT ANY TIME. Should students have cell phones
they must be TURNED OFF (not simply placed on vibrate or any other alternative) and they must be
kept out of sight. Parents please do not call your child on a cell phone during the school day; should you
need to contact a student please call the main office. Cell phones are extremely disruptive to a classroom
setting and will not be tolerated. Should a cell phone ring during class the student will surrender the cell
phone to Ms. Claitt (who will then give it to the principal), will receive a referral, and may earn
repercussions.

3. During announcements (PA system and other), stop all activities and sit quietly to listen. There is no talking or any other
activities done at this time even if the announcement does not pertain to you.
4. Should we have guests to visit our classroom or should we visit another classroom or leave our classroom for any reason,

students will behave with decorum befitting a serious, professional student. Students will behave professionally and
appropriately and will exude pride and confidence. Please remember that a guest is anyone other than the students
enrolled in the class who enters our classroom.

5. Backpacks are not permitted in the classroom. Per the administrative policy, student backpacks must be kept in their
lockers. During class, students will NOT be allowed to return to lockers or backpacks. (The locker rental fee is $10/year.)

6. Students will behave appropriately and intelligently at all times. Students will follow directions explicitly and efficiently.
Students will understand that they are here to receive an education reflect that understanding in through their behavior,
actions, and ability to complete assigned tasks.

Dismissal

Please remember the bell does not dismiss you. Ms. Claitt will attempt to provide students with 35 minutes to clean their
areas and prepare for the next class. Students will not be allowed to leave the classroom until their area is clean, their computers
are shut down, and their chairs are pushed in. Students will quietly remain in their seats and await dismissal until Ms. Claitt
dismisses them.
Students are not permitted to leave the classroom until the following:
Ms. Claitt says, You are dismissed or Ms. Claitt says a variation of this statement.

Please remember that I value every minute with my students. Please do not call students on cell phones. Should you
need to speak to a student during class or leave something for him/her, please contact the principal or main office.

Summary of Uniform Policy found in Student Handbook/Student Code of Conduct for the 2015 2016 School Year
Boys are to wear navy trousers/pants (or shorts) with a whit Oxford (button down) or white polo shirt (or a solid white shirt with a collar and
buttons), with no additional insignias or markings other than the official FAMU DRS/University logo. Shirts must be tucked into the
trousers/pants.(or shorts). A BLACK BELT must be worn with the uniform pants with a buckle that should not exceed the width of the
waistband. Cargo pants/trousers are NOT permitted. Trousers/pants are to be worn snugly and securely around the waist (sagging is NOT
permitted).
Girls are to wear plaid (navy blue and kelly green), navy pants/trousers, jumpers, shorts, or skorts with a white Oxford (button down) or a
white polo shirt (or a solid white shirt with a color and buttons), with no additional insignias or markings other than the official FAMU
DRS/University logo. Shirts must be tucked into the trousers/pants, shorts, skirts, or skorts. Shorts and skirts (and all bottoms) must be worn
at an appropriate length, with a minimum five-inch inseam on shorts, skirts, skorts or jumpers and which must extend to or past the
students fingertips. A BLACK BELT must be worn with uniform skirts, skorts, pants/trousers, jumpers, or shorts with a buckle that should
not exceed the width of the waistband. Appropriate undergarments must be worn at all times.
Footwear should be SOLID BLACK in color and cover the entire foot. Sneakers, tennis shoes, and common dress shoes are appropriate as
long as they are solid black. (Canvas sneakers, slides, thongs, flip-flops, and heels above two inches are prohibited.)
Special Note: Nothing in this Summary is meant to usurp or supersede any information or policies covered in the FAMU DRS Student Handbook/Student Code of Conduct. The FAMU DRS Student Handbook/Student Code of
Conduct is the ultimate and final authority/policy on student attire.

TECHNOLOGY IS A POWERFUL LEARNING TOOL; HOWEVER, IT MUST NOT BE ABUSED AND IT


MUST NOT BE USED INAPPROPRIATELY. ALL CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION STUDENTS
MUST ADHERE TO THE FOLLOWING RULES REGARDING TECHNOLOGY IN THE CLASSROOM.

All students must have a completed FAMU DRS Student Internet User Application submitted and on file.
All students must have a completed Schoology Guidelines and Schoology Code of Conduct submitted and on
file.
All students must have a completed Anti-Cyber Bullying Pledge submitted and on file.
Downloading any unauthorized software, games, and/or other interactive media is PROHIBITED (a violation
of this rule will earn a student appropriate repercussions)
All computers, Kindles, iPads, and other form of technology must be handled responsibly, with care, and are
not to be misused, abused, vandalized, altered, or stolen.
Unless otherwise noted due to a planned integration in a class activity or unless otherwise given express,
explicit permission from Ms. Claitt, students may not log onto any personal networking or communication
websites (including, but not limited to: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Tumblr, Kik, My Space, G-Mail,
Hotmail, Yahoo Mail, et cetera).
Unless otherwise noted due to a planned integration in a class activity or unless otherwise given express,
explicit permission from Ms. Claitt, student may NOT log onto or play any video games, music websites, or
other entertainment sites.
There will be certain activities for which personal cell phones may be utilized during class. This does NOT
mean that cell phones are permissible for student use during class time at any other time. Additionally, this
does NOT mean students are required to have cell phones. It is to simply say that there may be certain
activities that may allow for personal cell phone usage should students have and choose to use them.
(Advance notice will be provided.) *Please note, current school policy does not allow students to have cell
phones in the classroom without express, explicit permission from their teacher.
No eating or drinking near or around any form of technology in the classroom or lab.
Unless otherwise noted due to integration in the class activity or unless otherwise given express, explicit
