Saratoga Shores 3rd Grade

Purpose:

As your students teacher, I am committed to making this a great year. Helping your student
succeed is my first priority. In our classroom the focus is on hands-on, real life experiences that
help students build deeper understanding of the new things they are learning. Details of the state
standards we use can be found at http://www.uen.org/core.

Attendance:

The Balanced Math and Balanced Literacy programs that we use are very effective in helping
your student learn through hands-on, authentic experiences. Because of this, there is not a lot of
work that can be made up outside of class. Please help your child be at school every day and on time.
For any absence all work that can be made up outside of class needs to be completed and
returned. I do not send work home ahead of time. Missed work will be given to students when they
return to school following their absence. Please try not to schedule vacations from the end of April
through mid-May as that is when we will be reviewing for and taking our state tests.
If your child is going to be absent, please call the office.

Homework:

1. Weekly Homework Sheet

Students will take home a weekly homework sheet on Wednesday which will be due the
following Wednesday. The homework page is divided into daily tasks, but it can be completed at any
rate as long as it is returned completed the next week.
2. Spelling Practice

Students are also responsible for studying their spelling words at home to prepare for their
spelling test. Words will be sent home on Wednesday and the spelling test for those words will be the
following Wednesday. Spelling words can also be found on the class website. Students will be taught
ways to practice their words in class, and a list of ideas can also be found on the class website.
3. Reading

Students should read 20 minutes each day, or a total of 100 minutes per week. This can be
documented on the weekly homework sheet.
4. Term Project/Presentation

Every term the students will have a presentation where they have to Read, Write, and Present
their findings based on a book of their choosing. The type of book will change for each presentation
and more details will come as the project is assigned to the class.
5. Extra Practice

I may send home other homework (a math or writing worksheet or time on an adaptive math
website called Front Row Ed) when I see that it is necessary for extra practice in a particular area.

Grading:
Third grade will have standards based report cards this year similar to those students had in
nd
st
2 and 1 grades. Students grades will be based on a variety of assessments, including formal
tests, in-class assignments, observations, rubrics, and product guides. The following is the criteria
that assignments and assessments will be scored.

Discipline:
My goal is to create a classroom community that is exciting, safe, and positive. I expect the
students to treat others with respect and help promote a learning atmosphere. Our class rules
center on respect: respect for self, respect for others, and respect of property.
I use ClassDojo to monitor positive and negative behaviors in our class. Students receive
points for positive behaviors and lose points for behavior that needs improvement. Depending on
the behavior Dojo points may be given or taken away in a range of quantities. Once a student
earns 50 Dojo points, he/she will be able to choose a class coupon or a small reward.
Other possible negative consequences include:

a verbal warning
a refocus, or Be Wise check
loss of recess or other privileges
Think Time in a buddy room
phone call home
doing work over
writing a note of apology

*Other consequences may be applied that will be appropriate for the misbehavior. Generally,
students will receive a verbal warning before they receive a consequence like the loss of recess.
** Severe disruptions will be sent to the office immediately.
Note: Every student is different, and according to individual needs, I may adjust or make exceptions to these
procedures.

Birthdays:
If you choose to send in treats on your students birthday, they must be store bought. Have
your child bring them when they come to school, and we will pass them out in the lunchroom at
lunch time.

Contact Me:
My goal is to make sure you feel like you know what is happening with your child at school. I
will contact you throughout the year with updates about your students academic, social, and
behavioral progress. We will also have 2 parent-teacher conferences during the year. If you
have questions or concerns, you do not need to wait for a scheduled conference. Feel free to
contact me before of after school by email or phone call, or send a note with your child and I
will contact you as soon as possible. Thank you for your help and support!
