1.1 Share assignment-related informa;on only on a conden;al and as-needed basis (e.g.,
supervisors, interpreter team members, members of the educa;onal team, hiring en;;es).
1.2 Manage data, invoices, records, or other situa;onal or consumer-specic informa;on in a
manner consistent with maintaining consumer conden;ality (e.g., shredding, locked les).
1.3 Inform consumers when federal or state mandates require disclosure of
conden;al informa;on.

2.1 Provide service delivery regardless of race, color, na;onal


origin, gender, religion, age, dis- ability, sexual orienta;on, or
any other factor.

2.3 Render the message faithfully by conveying the content and spirit of
what is being communi- cated, using language most readily understood by
consumers, and correc;ng errors discreetly and expedi;ously.

2.2 Assess consumer needs and the interpre;ng situa;on before and
during the assignment and make adjustments as needed.

interpre;ng or community resources without infringing upon
consumers rights.

2.0 PROFESSIONALISM

4.1 Consider consumer requests or needs regarding language


preferences, and render the mes- sage accordingly (interpreted
or transliterated).

5.2 Work coopera;vely with team members through consulta;on before


assignments regarding logis;cs, providing professional and courteous
assistance when asked and monitoring the accuracy of the message
while func;oning in the role of the support interpreter.

4.2 Approach consumers with a professional demeanor


at all ;mes.

5.3 Approach colleagues privately to discuss and resolve breaches of ethical


or professional conduct through standard conict resolu;on methods; le a
formal grievance only aYer such aZempts have been unsuccessful or the
breaches are harmful or habitual.

4.3 Obtain the consent of consumers before bringing an intern to


an assignment.

4.4 Facilitate communica;on access and equality, and support


the full interac;on and independ- ence of consumers.

personnel if there is a conict with this Code of Professional Conduct, and ac;vely
seek resolu;on where warranted.
3.5 Conduct and present themselves in an unobtrusive manner and
exercise care in choice of aare.
3.6 Refrain from the use of mind-altering substances before or during the
performance of du;es.
3.7 Disclose to par;es involved any actual or perceived conicts of
interest.
3.8 Avoid actual or perceived conicts of interest that might cause harm or
interfere with the eec;veness of interpre;ng services.

6.4 Inform appropriate par;es in a ;mely manner when delayed or


unable to fulll assignments.

7.0 PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT


6.5 Reserve the op;on to decline or discon;nue assignments if working
condi;ons are not safe, healthy, or conducive to interpre;ng.

7.1 Increase knowledge and strengthen skills through ac;vi;es such as:
pursuing higher educa;on; aZending workshops and conferences; seeking
mentoring and supervision opportuni;es; par;cipa;ng in community events;
and engaging in independent studies.

7.2 Keep abreast of laws, policies, rules, and regula;ons that


aect the profession.

3.9 Refrain from using conden;al interpreted informa;on for personal,


monetary, or professional gain.

6.6 Refrain from harassment or coercion before, during, or


aYer the provision of interpre;ng services.

6.7 Render pro bono services in a fair and reasonable


manner.

6.8 Charge fair and reasonable fees for the performance of interpre;ng services and arrange for
payment in a professional and judicious manner.

3.10 Refrain from using conden;al interpreted informa;on for the benet
of personal or pro- fessional alia;ons or en;;es.
