RF150 CDMA Operations Info Toolkit -- v1.01 - (c) 2001 Scott Baxter

1-1

Safety Considerations
Dont worry for your companys loss due to your accidental death
Qualified and eager replacements have resumes on file
Were constantly buying more drive-test vehicles
We were going to replace that old drive-test equipment soon
Were not really sure we needed your last drive test, anyway
Your death will serve as a warning to others, so its not in vain
But Its OK to be careful and continue living for your own sake if you wish!
Always start and stop drive test file collection in a safe place off the road
and out of traffic patterns
Display measurement windows - their motion can provide a quickglance visual reassurance that collection is running OK
While on the road, do not attempt to start or stop files, open or close
windows, or review results - just glance occasionally for signs of activity
If the PC freezes, the power cord pops out, or any other problem occurs
while collecting, dont try to deal with it or correct it while driving
Just pull over to the next really safe place to investigate

1-2

Physical Considerations
Be sure the connections (power, phone, PC and GPS cables) are
secure so they wont dislodge during collection and distract you
Be sure the equipment is physically restrained so it wont go flying
around and hit you in case of a panic stop or sudden swerve
Some GPS antennas are not weatherproof. Try to avoid getting
them drenched in heavy rain
The GPS antennas should be mounted where they have a good
view of the sky, as unobstructed as possible
External PCS or Cellular antennas should not be mounted closer
than about 1 foot to each other or to the GPS antennas to ensure
there is no significant electromagnetic interference or pattern
distortion

1-3

Operational Concerns
The ideal length for drive-test files is 30 minutes to an hour
Youd hate to lose bigger files in case the PC locks up!
Larger files are a hassle to move around, load, and analyze
When interesting call processing events occur, its nice if they are in
small files that can be easily processed and stored
Always make sure you have at least 500 MB of free hard drive space
before you start a new drive-test collection
Dont open other programs while collecting data - they can tie up all
your free space in swap files and cause a crash
Check your hard drive for errors and defragment it every week or so if
youre collecting and transferring big files
Dont retrace large parts of your travel path during a drive-test run
Its harder to distinguish what happened on each run when analyzing
drives that cruise the same road multiple times
Always stop the test call before you stop recording -- otherwise, postprocessing software may misinterpret calling events

Don't Let Data.mdb Grow Too Big

or get Overwritten!
When using Agilent drive-test equipment, data accumulates very
quickly. A days driving can easily produce a 500 MB data file
(data.mdb), or even larger.
Dont allow file data.mdb to grow too large to manage or copy
to other media and computers. Rename or copy and delete the
file when it reaches a few hundred MB, and do your next
collection in a new file.
Without caution, this file can grow so large that it cant be
practically copied to other computers, and so large that it takes
many hours just to open it using post-processing software.

Agilent Setup
In any drive-test system, you must choose what information you
want to record before you start the drive test
In the Agilent system, information is chosen by setting up a
measurement that displays that information
Be sure to collect everything you might want to look at later -- if it
isnt collected while youre driving, it wont be in the file!
In Agilent drive-test systems, it is easy to create a project that
includes all the desired measurements
We normally want to collect the following:
PN Scanner (on both F1 and F2, if you have F2)
Phones (on both F1 and F2, if you have F2)
Phone messaging (the layer 3 messages)
The following slides show the screens necessary to set up all
these measurements
