Course Description
Environmental Science is the branch of biology concerned with the relations between
organisms and their environment. This course is designed to help students develop an
awareness of the environment, living and nonliving. This ecology class will help prepare
students with information that may be presented on the high school exit exam. Students,
upon successful completion of this course, should be able to write and speak intelligently
concerning issues in environmental science. It is essential that you keep up with the
material assigned to read and the homework assigned to be turned in throughout the
semester. Attendance is essential since we will l be covering multiple topics daily due to
the block scheduling.

Standards
SEV1 Students will investigate the flow of energy and cycling of matter within an
ecosystem and relate these phenomena to human society.
SEV2 Students will demonstrate an understanding that the Earth is one
interconnected system.
SEV3 Students will describe stability and change in ecosystems.
SEV4 Students will understand and describe availability, allocation and
conservation of energy and other resources
SEV5 Students will recognize that human beings are part of the global ecosystem
and will evaluate the effects of human activities and technology on ecosystems.

Methodology
This course is taught through a variety of methods including hands-on activities,
lecture, real world application, individual and group presentations and projects, as
well as laboratory experiences that accompany the content material.
Methods of Assessment and Evaluation

Graded work will focus on a variety of activities, giving students many opportunities
to excel. Students are expected to contribute to a positive learning environment on a daily
basis. This includes coming to class prepared with their science notebook, paper,
pen/pencil, and other needed materials. Students will be assessed using a variety of
assessments including, but not limited to, labs, collaborative classroom assignments,
tests, quizzes, projects, and bell work.

obtained in the front office.

Homework Policy

Homework will be assigned at the teachers discretion. Evaluation of homework
may consist of detailed grading, generalized checking, or a combination of both
techniques.

Make-up Policy

Students requiring make up work due to absences need to get the materials from
their teacher and turn them in when due or five days after the absence whichever is
appropriate. If students need to make up a test before school they should make an
appointment. Again all work needs to be completed by 5 days after the absence or it can
result in a zero for the assignment. Extenuating circumstances due to extended illness or
absence will be considered on a case by case basis.

Course Syllabus Agreement

Please sign and return for a quiz grade. If it is not returned you are still expected to abide
according to the syllabus, and a zero will be recorded for your first quiz grade. Please be
sure to get this signed and returned by Friday, August 7, 2015. Again, this is a free chance
for every student to get started off with a 100% for their first grade of the semester.
I have read the syllabus and agree to conduct myself in accordance with the rules and
guidelines set forth. I understand that breaking the rules will result in the appropriate
action as stated in the syllabus. The only exceptions are family emergencies or other
types of extreme circumstances which will be dealt with on an individual basis.
I also am aware of how to contact Mr. Ruoro about any aspect of my students course work
