ASPEN IMPACT: WHAT IT MEANS

n the more than six decades since its founding, the Aspen
Institute has grown and evolved in many directions but
it has always held fast to its reputation as the place where
policymakers, writers, artists, executives, and members of the
public can come together to explore the values underpinning
society. That reputation, though, is incomplete. From the
beginning, the Institute has been driven by a desire to both
convene and have real-world impact.

This desire stems from founder Walter Paepckes focus on the

good society a concept that still lies at the heart of the Institute.
The good society is not some final destination. Instead, it is
an ideal, an aspiration a continual striving for improvement,
individually and collectively, driven by both the ideas we explore
and the actions we take.
Impact begins with convenings that seed ideas in the minds of
participants. The back and forth of critical thought, reasoned
response, and careful listening amid diverse, nonpartisan
gatherings makes ideas resonate and reverberate, echo
and grow, until they germinate beyond the confines of the
conference room.
They may take the form of motivations, inspirations, aspirations,
or innovations; but what begins with a roomful of people
exchanging insights and experiences soon touches many,
directly and indirectly. Aspen fellows and grassroots leaders take
on daunting challenges that affect their communities. Reports
guide local and national policymakers, who adopt and adapt
best practices. These specific, measurable effects spread the
reach of the Institute and its idea of the good society" and
lead the way to another season of new gatherings and new ideas
among the Institutes programs.
The Institute has repeatedly witnessed the power of this cycle.
Perhaps the best recent example was the Communications and
Society programs Community Dialogue on Healing the Racial
Divide, held in St. Louis, Missouri. Prompted by tensions in the

wake of the violent conflicts in the nearby city of Ferguson, the

Institute invited community activists, law enforcement leaders,
educators, and journalists to sit down together for an open,
collaborative, and productive dialogue on the sensitive issue of
race. The ideas that came to the surface were soon transformed
into actions. Participants discussed creating young leadership
and mentoring programs, providing community-relations
training for law enforcement officers, and establishing youth
boards to increase dialogue between police and local youth.
Institute fellows often marvel over how ideas so commonly
pollinate even within small groups. Two New Voices Fellows found
that one of the most important audiences for our messages
was within the Fellowship itself, where a group of development
experts from Africa and other parts of the developing world could
compare notes and come up with new solutions solutions
they put to practical use, to help reduce childhood malnutrition.
Joaquin Gallegos, a 24-year-old member of the Jicarilla Apache
Nation who was selected by the Institutes Center for Native
American Youth as one of five Champions for Change, says that
his advocacy for health care access and environmental issues has
been enriched and enhanced through his relationships with
other youth he met in the program, even though we might not
focus on all of the same issues.
The contrasting opinions Gallegos now prizes are no coincidence.
A critical element of this cycle is that our gatherings include
people of differing backgrounds, ideologies, cultures, and areas
of expertise. This variety of approaches and views ensures that
we are not creating yet another echo chamber but are instead
challenging our participants to open their minds and listen as
much as they speak. In a time of heightened polarization, the
Institute is an island of stubborn civility a place where people
of many political stripes and convictions can come together to
listen to each other as they can nowhere else.

The Aspen-Blackstone Middle East & North Africa

Entrepreneurship Program brought small business owners
from the Middle East and North Africa to Silicon Valley for a
week of mentorship that has since led to dramatic growth,
new financing, and expansion into new countries.

A 2014 report by the Education and Society program,

Leading From the Front of the Classroom: A Roadmap for
Teacher Leadership that Works, has been used in a series
of US Department of Education programs and distributed
to every teacher within the Kentucky Department of
Education system.

Two Aspen Global Health and Development New Voices

Fellows one a doctor, the other an agricultural policy
researcher created two comprehensive initiatives to
combat childhood malnutrition in Africa.

Several municipalities used the Communications and

Society Programs report, The Dialogue on Public Libraries,
to acquire new funding for the design, building, and
expansion of public libraries; libraries and library trustees
have also used it as an engagement and teaching tool.

GHDs Alliance for Artisan Enterprise partnered with the

Clinton Global Initiative, Kiva, and the US Department of
State to help mostly female artisans create jobs, improve
their families' economic status, and foster development
around the world.

Through Aspen Summer Words, author Alexandra Oliva

cemented her commitment to writing, found an agent, and
sold her debut novel, The Last One.

Inspired by his participation in a Socrates seminar on the

global middle class, Tanzanian Member of Parliament Zitto
Kabwe established a palm oil company that he expects will
help elevate tens of thousands of Tanzanians from poverty
to the middle class.

to effectively address their most pressing challenges. Its Opportunity Youth Incentive Fund works to demonstrate higher rates of reconnection to education and
employment among opportunity youth and future generations; catalyze adoption
of effective approaches in education and career attainment leading to family-sustaining careers for opportunity youth; and leverage systems and policy changes
at local, state, and national levels to remove systemic barriers. Melody C. Barnes,

Aspen Global Health and Development promotes solutions to persistent global

health and development problems. It is a force for fresh thinking, unlikely collaborations, and nimble action within the global health and development field.
Current programs tackle areas where new paradigms and innovative partnerships are needed, including womens health, a fellowship for young African
and Asian voices in global development discussions, support for the emerging
artisan enterprise sector, and leadership for the last mile in global health. Our
programs mobilize policy to support innovation in low-income communities on
key issues; and they support the advancement of a number of ideas, including
recognition of reproductive health as a key contributor to other development
outcomes globally, adoption of policy innovations to address global health
workforce issues, an alliance that aims to unleash the artisan sectors economic
potential, a fellowship program for development experts who receive global
media training, and advancement of sustainable and equitable efforts to feed a
world population of more than nine billion.

AMERICAN IDENTITY PROGRAM

In a time of rising inequality and rapidly increasing diversity, the question of what
it means to be American and how we create a unifying story of us is of prime
consequence. The Aspen Program on Citizenship and American Identity explores
this question through a range of cross-partisan activity, from public forums to
leadership convenings, to seminars. Across our forms of engagement, we focus on
three aspects of citizenship: values, systems, and skills. The values segment focuses
on articulating (and updating) the creedal and cultural content of American civic
identity. The systems segment includes policy proposals and multi-sector collaborations to build social cohesion. The skills segment teaches leaders to construct coalitions and a sense of shared fate across increasingly rigid class and race divides.
This program is directed by Eric Liu, the founder of Citizen University, author, and
former White House speechwriter and policy advisor to President Bill Clinton.

The Franklin Project envisions a future in which a year of full-time national

service a service year is a cultural expectation, a common opportunity, and a
civic rite of passage for every young American. Each person can fulfill his or her
national service obligation by joining the military or by completing a full-time
civilian service year through programs such as Teach for America, AmeriCorps,
the Peace Corps, or any eligible nonprofit. A modest living allowance would
be provided for the service year, which would be completed at some point
between the ages of 1828.
The Institute launched the Franklin Project in 2013, as a program tasked with
creating a voluntary civilian counterpart to military service in the United States.

Born from General Stanley McChrystals call at the 2012 Aspen Ideas Festival to
engage more Americans in serving their communities and country, the initiative
has engaged leaders in military, business, government, nonprofit, faith, academic, community-building, and other sectors to support large-scale civilian service.
Its formation is vital at a time of national division, when the entrepreneurial
energy of citizens must be harnessed to help solve public problems and bring
people of different perspectives together. General McChrystal chairs the project, and John Bridgeland of Civic Enterprises and Alan Khazei of City Year and
Be the Change, Inc. serve as co-chairs responsible for designing and managing
the initiative. Former US Sen. Harris Wofford serves as senior advisor.
ASPEN INSTITUTE LATINOS AND SOCIETY PROGRAM

The Latinos and Society Program is focused on increasing the understanding of,
and improving outcomes for, the growing US Latino population. The Latinos and
Society program will convene meaningful dialogues among cross-sections of society with a focus on influencing positive outcomes, infusing the work of the Aspen
Institute with Latino voices and ideas, and developing Latino leadership capacity.
As the largest minority group in the US (projected to reach 26 percent of the
population by 2050) and as a relatively young and rapidly growing population,
Latinos will be entering our schools, health systems, and labor force at unprecedented rates. Their success or failure will directly impact the direction of the
country. Their participation and representation in all sectors of society and
leadership is critical to our democracy. Our work will emphasize a particular
focus on educational achievement, economic advancement, and civic participation. We will also launch a Latino Leadership Initiative focused on developing
the next generation of entrepreneurial, civic-minded Latino leaders equipped
to positively impact their communities by undertaking leadership projects and
contributing to Americas future.
ASPEN NETWORK OF DEVELOPMENT ENTREPRENEURS

The Aspen Network of Development Entrepreneurs is a global network of organizations that propel entrepreneurship in emerging markets. ANDE members
provide critical financial, educational, and business support services to small

and growing businesses based on the conviction that SGBs will create jobs,
stimulate long-term economic growth, and produce environmental and social
benefits. Ultimately, we believe that SGBs can help lift countries out of poverty.
Members of ANDE include both for- and non-profit investment funds, capacity
development providers, research and academic institutions, development finance
institutions and corporations from around the world. Launched with 34 members
in 2009, ANDE now comprises over 200 members who collectively operate in
more than 150 countries. ANDE has regional chapters in Brazil, Central America,
Mexico, East Africa, East and Southeast Asia, India, South Africa, and West Africa.
ASPEN PLANNING AND EVALUATION PROGRAM

APEP helps clients plan and evaluate efforts to shape public policy and promote changes in attitudes and behavior. Program staff and consultants work
internally with other Institute programs as well as with foundations and nongovernmental organizations based in the US, Africa, and Europe to assess their
advocacy and social change efforts. APEPs recent evaluation clients address issues as diverse as reducing the incidence of child marriage worldwide, improving the practices of microfinance providers, empowering women and girls in
Kenya, and promoting a new vision for American public libraries. The program
also leads the Institutes internal program review process.

How can Americas national security establishment better adapt to nascent threats
and challenges? As current global trends defy traditional notions of international relations, what common problems do nations face in the 21st century?
This program focuses on transnational issues that blend foreign and domestic
subjects. Founded in 1984 with a concentration on strategic relations, arms
control issues, and the US-Soviet relationship, its roots as an annual conference
for researchers associated with arms control projects at universities and think
tanks date back to the 1970s. As the group evolved, it also included legislators,
government officials, business and industry representatives, and journalists. The
current program has moved beyond its Cold War origins and today includes
three generations of policymakers representing a range of perspectives.

The approach, however, has remained constant: to use a bipartisan lens to

identify the most contentious foreign policy and national security concerns
facing our nation and to assess Americas evolving interests. Recent workshops,
briefings, and reports have covered the crisis with Russia, the future of American defense, Arab revolutions and American policy, cyber security, American
interests in South Asia, the national security implications of climate change, and
the challenge of nuclear proliferation. The Aspen Ministers Forum and Track II
dialogues with Brazil, China, and India also convene under the auspices of the
Aspen Strategy Group.
BUSINESS AND SOCIETY PROGRAM

unemployment, poverty, alcohol and substance abuse, crime, and health disparities persist in many tribal communities. CNAY brings together Native youth, tribal
leaders, and organizations in the public and private sector through roundtables,
summits, and events held throughout Indian Country; houses a youth leadership
program inspired by a White House initiative called Champions for Change; and
most recently, partnered with the White House to launch a network aimed at removing barriers between Native youth and their opportunities to succeed.
COLLEGE EXCELLENCE PROGRAM

Established in 1998 and building on 60 years of Institute programming, the

Aspen Institute Business and Society Program works to align business with the
long-term health of society by helping established and emerging business
leaders put values at the heart of practice. Through dialogue, research, and
outreach, BSP creates opportunities for executives and educators to explore
new routes to business sustainability and values-based leadership. Its Corporate
Values Strategy Group supports business executives in developing long-term
thinking in business, investing through change in corporate practice and public
policy, and exploration of fundamental questions on business purpose. The programs First Movers Fellowship is for exceptional business innovators who are
integrating profitability and social value in their companies. Its Leaders Forum
engages senior executives who are pushing the boundaries of what it means
to be a socially, environmentally, and economically sustainable company. The
program is also home to several signature programs for vanguard business educators, including CasePlace.org, Faculty Pioneers, and an undergraduate network linking business and liberal arts. These programs highlight cutting-edge
teaching and research on social and environmental stewardship.

Improving college student outcomes is a vital national priority. Only half of all college students graduate, college access and success remain strongly correlated to
race and income, and evidence suggests that the learning that takes place in college is too often limited and not well aligned with what students need to succeed.
Over the past 50 years, increased college access has benefited millions of Americans, but now the nation must get more students through college with the skills
and abilities needed for success after graduating. The goal of this program is to
identify and accelerate the replication of practices and policies that improve and
make more equitable student success in learning, completion, and post-graduation employment. Several of the programs initiatives relate to community
colleges, including the Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence, which
awards one million dollars biennially to the nations best community colleges and
works to replicate exceptional college outcomes nationwide. A second community college project works to align the hiring and professional development of community college presidents with the goals of improving student success. Extending
the programs reach into the four-year sector, three newer projects are addressing
community college to university transfer, the future of the college presidency, and
socioeconomic diversity at top American colleges and universities.

CENTER FOR NATIVE AMERICAN YOUTH

Created by former US Sen. Byron Dorgan, CNAY is aimed at bringing greater

national attention and fostering solutions to the issues facing American Indian
and Alaska Native youth, our nations most at-risk population. Despite the efforts

This program serves as a venue for global leaders and experts to exchange
insights on the societal impact of advances in digital technology and network
communications. It also creates a multidisciplinary space in the communications

policymaking world where veteran and emerging decision-makers can explore

new concepts and develop policy networks. The program convenes approximately 10 leadership roundtables each year on diverse subjects such as e-commerce, internet governance, institutional innovation, spectrum policy, race and
media, and diplomacy and technology. The program is also conducting ongoing projects on the future of public libraries and on connected learning. Leaders
from across disciplines and perspectives engage in moderated discussions that
culminate in specific conclusions and recommendations. Conference reports
are distributed to key policymakers and opinion leaders around the world and
are available to the public online.
COMMUNITY STRATEGIES GROUP

This group helps leaders in rural, urban, and suburban communities act together to create more vibrant regions that advance and sustain prosperity and
wellbeing for local people, places, and firms, including those on the economic
margins. CSG helps community leaders on the ground connect with and motivate each other. It also equips them with the best ideas, tools, and strategies
to improve community and economic results. The groups hallmark approach
is tailored, peer-to-peer exchanges in which community-based leaders create
immediate back-home action plans. CSG also brings together disconnected
leaders in specific geographic regions to collaborate and find common aims,
and it connects community innovators with regional and national experts and
funders. It distills community lessons into action guides, good-practice profiles,
virtual peer-learning exchanges, and online resources. CSG builds and manages three networks of community-based practitioners and regional leaders from
across the country, one focused on advancing family economic success, one
on community development philanthropy, and another on the WealthWorks
approach to regional economic development.
CONGRESSIONAL PROGRAM

This is a nonpartisan, public policy education and civility-building program for

members of the US Congress in which more than 30 percent of the current
Congress has participated. At a time of Congressional gridlock and extreme
partisanship, the program offers Republican and Democratic legislators the

opportunity to learn from internationally recognized academics and experts and

to explore policy alternatives. It assists legislators in developing a deeper understanding of public policy options and the personal relationships necessary to
help Congress meaningfully address our nations problems. Although the program does not endorse specific legislation, for more than three decades it has
provided a forum for discussion of policy issues that has often sown the seeds
for significant policy initiatives. Current subjects include international economic
and security issues; extremism; energy security; policy challenges in Africa; and
US policy with regard to Russia, NATO, Asia, and the Middle East. The program
is funded solely by foundations, and it annually sponsors two dozen breakfast
meetings and four conferences for members of Congress. No lobbyists, congressional staff, or outside observers are permitted, and the House and Senate
ethics committees review all conference agendas. The program also has a
parallel educational effort as a resource for key congressional staff to analyze the
most effective policies to deliver foreign development assistance.
ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITIES PROGRAM

This program promotes strategies to help low-income Americans succeed

in todays dynamic economy. Its areas of focus include labor market strategies
that enable low-income people to successfully engage and thrive in our rapidly
changing economy, entrepreneurship and small or microenterprise development,
and innovations that allow low-income Americans to build assets and achieve
a measure of economic security. The program works closely with national and
local leaders focused on building opportunity, including those from community
colleges, community-based nonprofits, businesses, and economic development
organizations, as well as elected officials, policy staff, and other stakeholders. It
evaluates innovative and promising strategies, provides peer learning and leadership development opportunities for local leaders, develops practical tools that
help organizations implement promising strategies, and promotes public conversation around the issues facing low-income Americans and ideas for promoting
shared prosperity. The program includes three distinct initiatives: the Microenterprise Fund for Innovation, Effectiveness, Learning, and Dissemination (FIELD); the
Workforce Strategies Initiative; and Skills for Americas Future.

The program works to improve public education by inspiring, informing, and

influencing education leaders across policy and practice, with an emphasis on
achieving equity for traditionally underserved students. The program facilitates important conversations that are informed by research, experience, and
divergent perspectives. The program also convenes workshops and roundtable
discussions for federal, state, and local policymakers and their staffs; education
leaders at all levels, from superintendents to teachers; and researchers to develop concrete solutions to complex problems. The program produces reports
that inform national policy debates and tools and resources that deepen and
accelerate the work of our partner states and districts.
ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENT PROGRAM

This program provides a neutral forum for constructive civil society dialogue on
complex energy and environmental policy issues, thereby deepening knowledge, broadening perspectives, and enhancing the capacity of leaders to solve
problems. The programs core competency is convening strategic groups of
experts from government, business, academia, and nonprofit organizations in
dialogue structured and moderated for discussion, exploration, and consensus
building. The program annually convenes the Forum on Global Energy, Economy, and Security, which focuses on global oil and gas; the Energy Policy Forum,
which focuses on domestic electricity; the Clean Energy Forum, which focuses
on innovation; and, more recently, the Aspen-Nicholas Water Forum and the

This program was established in response to the increasing need for and reliance on public-private alliances to take on the challenges that the public sector
is unequipped to tackle on its own. As a platform for cross-sector collaboration, the Global Alliances Program has partnered with the Department of State
to encourage US cooperation and investment in business and communities
across the globe. These Partnership Opportunity Delegations are deployed in
response to local communities priorities and result in business-to-business and
people-to-people partnerships. To date, PODs have gone to Colombia, Myanmar, and Tanzania; and PODs to Cuba, Myanmar, Bhutan, and Madagascar are
planned. GAP has also partnered with the Department of Defense to foster a
culture of innovation and learning within the Office of the Secretary of Defense.
The New Ideas @ OSD series brings experts from outside the national security
field to the Pentagon to consult with Defense leadership on how to shape policy
in ways that are innovative, adaptive, and effective in a changing and complex
global security environment. By convening and facilitating partnerships between the US public and private sectors, as well as their international counterparts, GAP strives to build equitable, sustainable relationships between communities and to foster greater development and prosperity.
HEALTH, MEDICINE, AND SOCIETY PROGRAM

This program creates opportunities for government, industry, academic, advocacy, and industry leaders to explore critical issues in health, health care, medical science, and health policy in the US. The Health, Medicine, and Society Program facilitates knowledge exchanges and advances strategic thinking among
these decision makers through nonpartisan, multi-disciplinary public policy
programs and dialogue, including roundtables, briefings, conferences, and
Internet forums. These convenings encourage collaborative networks among
leading policymakers, health professionals, scientists, and advocates in a broad
range of fields, while helping to inform and advance policies to improve the
health of individuals, families, communities, the nation, and the world. In 2014,
in collaboration with the Global Health and Development Program, HMS designed and hosted the inaugural Spotlight Health event, now the lead-in session
to the annual Aspen Ideas Festival. HMS also contributed to projects sponsored
by other policy programs (including Ascend and Energy and Environment) by
helping to bring the health lens to their work. In addition, efforts continued and
progress was made in establishing HMS initiatives in health policy and biomedical innovation, and new projects in bioethics and gun violence received initial
funding support.

HOMELAND SECURITY PROGRAM

Years have passed since 9/11, yet holes remain in Americas defenses against
terrorism, heightening the risk of another attack. This program identifies gaps
in the nations defenses against terrorism and recommends ways to close them.
Through reports, roundtable discussions, Congressional testimony, and forums,
it strives to convince policymakers, stakeholders, and the public at large to
reduce Americas vulnerability to terrorism.
INITIATIVE ON FINANCIAL SECURITY

It is widely known that saving sparks entrepreneurship, fuels growth in capital

markets, builds the middle class, and creates jobs for the future. But in an era
of increasing income volatility and inequality, many families struggle to build a
financial cushion, let alone a nest egg. The Aspen Initiative on Financial Security promotes an in-depth exploration of the most critical financial challenges
facing America's families. Through its use of strategic convenings, dialogues,
briefings, and publications, the program advances workable solutions that help
hard working Americans manage economic shocks, become more financially resilient, and get on track to pursue long term savings and investment goals. The
Initiative moves stakeholder dialogue beyond diagnosis, to bring to the national
forefront a solutions-focused discussion of how the rapidly evolving financial
system and public policies can work together to improve the financial security
and financial wellbeing of all Americans.
JUSTICE & SOCIETY PROGRAM

For four decades, the Justice & Society Program has convened individuals from
diverse backgrounds to discuss the meaning of justice and how a just society
ought to balance fundamental rights with the exigencies of public policy in
order to meet contemporary social challenges and strengthen the rule of law.
Through our public programming component which includes the Susman
Conversation on the Constitution and the Courts at Aspen, periodic roundtables
at the Institutes Washington office, and presentations by leading jurists we
bring to the table public officials, established and emerging opinion leaders,

and grassroots organizers to share their perspectives in a neutral and balanced

forum. Recent and ongoing multi-year projects focus on law and policy issues,
including religious free exercise (Inclusive America Project, 20122015), state
public health policy (Excellence in State Public Health Law Program, 20132014
and 20152016), and judicial independence in the US and globally (ongoing).
The annual Justice and Society Seminar, held in Aspen and co-founded by the
late US Supreme Court Associate Justice Harry A. Blackmun, continues to be led
by preeminent judges and law professors. The Justice Circle, an exclusive group
of Justice & Society Program supporters co-chaired by Tristan Duncan and
Steve Susman, was launched in January 2014. Through the Circle, friends of JSP
maintain an ongoing connection to our work and enjoy special events.
MANUFACTURING AND SOCIETY IN THE 21ST CENTURY

The US manufacturing sector has long been a source of good jobs and increases in the standard of living. In recent decades the relative decline of the sector
has led to questions about its future viability. This program brings business,
government, and opinion leaders together to discuss and analyze many of the
important problems and opportunities affecting the future of manufacturing in
an increasingly globalized economy. Policy discussions are convened in Washington, DC, and in Italy in collaboration with Aspen Italia; and a CEO seminar is
held in Aspen, Colorado, to build consensus on issues important to the sector.
Recent forums and publications have touched on the following topics: globalization and its impact on manufacturing, trade policy, skills training for industrial
workers, manufacturing as a source of growth, oil exports and manufacturing,
women in the manufacturing workforce, the German model of supporting manufacturing, and the investment gap in the US economy.
MIDDLE EAST PROGRAMS

The Institutes Middle East Programs develop and implement pragmatic economic and policy initiatives that advance stability and prosperity in the Middle
East. MEP is home to several policy initiatives, including Partners for a New Beginning, the Emirates-Aspen Partnership, the Levant Program, and a roundtable series on energy diplomacy in the Middle East. Additionally, MEP is a collaborating

on Advancing Equity through Opportunity, which will use a deliberative process to

Begun in 1981, this program promotes sustainable economic growth and financial stability in the world economy by convening prominent leaders from both industrial and developing nations. It uses an interdisciplinary approach to generate

Through convenings, leadership development initiatives, communications, and

strategic partnerships, this program seeks to maximize the impact of social-sector
leaders in contributing to the good society at home and abroad. It hosts the Aspen
Philanthropy Group, an agenda-setting body of foundation leaders at the cutting
edge of change, and it spurs dialogue among leaders from the private, public, and
social sectors in working groups on specific issues of concern. Among the programs current working group series is the Nonprofit Data Working Group, an effort
to ensure high quality and accessible statistical data on social sector activity. Leadership development initiatives include the annual summer social enterprise, the
American Express Foundation-Aspen Institute Fellowship for Emerging Nonprofit
Leaders, as well as the Aspen Philanthropy Seminar and the Seminar for Mid-America Foundation CEOs. The programs Artist-Endowed Foundations Initiative strengthens the next generation of foundations endowed by visual artists by increasing the
capacity of these new entities to fulfill their donors charitable intentions. The programs policy work includes the Impact Economy Initiative, which seeks to create an
enabling environment for investments and enterprises that generate both financial
profit and positive social or environmental returns. To extend the reach of its networking and share the knowledge generated by its convenings, the program hosts

ALMA AND JOSEPH GILDENHORN BOOK SERIES

This regular lunch series held in Washington, DC, presents informal
conversations with notable authors of current books. It is a chance to listen to
and talk with biographers, philosophers, political scientists, journalists, scholars,
and other writers about their work. Harvard Social Scientist Robert Putnam,
Rockefeller Foundation President Judith Rodin, former New York Schools
Chancellor Joel Klein, and New York Times columnist Charles Blow were among
the past years featured authors. The series is underwritten by Lifetime Trustee
Alma Gildenhorn and her husband Ambassador Joseph Gildenhorn.
ASPEN ACROSS AMERICA
Aspen Across America provides a forum for dialogue and informed discussion
in venues all across the country, providing the level of discourse the nation
deserves through thoughtful and challenging exploration of the most significant
problems facing the nation and the world. Aspen Across America provides a reexamination of ideas that cultivate the ideals of a good society.
ASPEN AROUND TOWN SERIES
With the support of underwriter and Trustee Michelle Smith, the Washington,
DC-based evening event series officially launched in December 2012. The public offerings are held around the city in conjunction with other highly regarded
partnering organizations and showcase discussions across a broad range of
topics between experts and renowned individuals from multifaceted backgrounds. Among the events featured this year, the Series hosted a conversation
on the 50th anniversary of Letter from Birmingham City Jail at the National Cathedral, featuring former US Poet Laureate Natasha Trethewey, Yale Law School
professor Stephen L. Carter, American civil rights leader Julian Bond, and Dean
of the Washington National Cathedral Rev. Gary Hall.

ASPEN AT ROOSEVELT HOUSE

The Institutes main venue in New York, Roosevelt House, is the historic home of
Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt and the Public Policy Institute of Hunter College.
Each academic year, the Institute and Hunter College present programs at the
house focused on critical public policy issues such as the economy, the arts, and
the environment.
ASPEN CHALLENGE
In partnership with the Bezos Family Foundation and with support from local
funders who contribute to the school districts themselves, the 2015 Aspen Challenge engaged students from Denver Public Schools, the Los Angeles Unified
School District, DC Public Schools, and the DC Public Charter School Board.
The Aspen Challenge begins with a forum for students and teachers from partner
high schools in each city. At the event, leaders pioneering change to some of the
worlds most pressing issues present challenges to the school teams. Equipped
with tools and support, the groups then design a solution to their selected
challenge. Seven weeks later, they present their solutions on stage in a daylong
competition, and the teams are selected to advance and showcase their work at
the Aspen Ideas Festival. Three teams from Washington, DC, and one team from
Los Angeles and Denver, respectively, will present at the Festival in 2015.

The Aspen Institute Arts Program was established to support and invigorate the
arts in America and to return them to the center of the Institute's Great Conversation. Directed by Damian Woetzel, it brings together artists, advocates,

and develop policies and programs that strengthen the reciprocal relationship between the arts and society. Program activities include initiatives such

What are the key security threats we face as a nation, and how safe are we today?
The Institutes Homeland Security Program, CNN, and The New York Times
present this three-day symposium in Aspen, Colorado, that brings together

key national security issues. These themes include the state of cyber and aviation security, counterterrorism strategy and intelligence issues, and regions of
importance to US national security.

Founded in Aspen in 1976, Aspen Words is one of the nations leading literary
centers and a stage for the worlds most prominent authors. Its programs employ literature as a tool for provoking thought, broadening perspectives, fostering connections, and inspiring creativity. Since 2009, it has worked in partnership with the Institute to reinforce the humanistic ideals of both organizations
and to cultivate the inner life through the exchange of words, stories, and ideas.
CITYLAB: URBAN SOLUTIONS TO GLOBAL CHALLENGES
The Aspen Institute, The Atlantic, and Bloomberg Philanthropies will gather the
worlds foremost mayors and urban leaders for the third annual CityLab: Urban
Solutions to Global Challenges, to be held this year in London on October
1820, 2015. The working summit will bring together civic leaders, practitioners,
academics, and business leaders to advance bold, scalable ideas and emerging trends that are transforming cities around the world into more livable and
sustainable places to live, work, and play. Speakers and attendees are drawn
from a diverse global roster; last years 550 participants represented 127 cities
and 26 countries.

CONVERSATIONS WITH GREAT LEADERS IN MEMORY OF

PRESTON ROBERT TISCH
Founded in 2009, the Institutes flagship discussion series in New York City is
underwritten by Laurie, Steve, Jonathan, and Lizzie Tisch to memorialize the
legacy of their father, Preston Robert Tisch, an extraordinary business leader,
philanthropist, and public servant. The series features moderated conversations
with influential leaders from all walks of civic life. It also includes the annual
Preston Robert Tisch Award in Civic Leadership. Highlights have included
conversations with womens sports pioneer Billie Jean King, former New York
City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, media visionary Arianna Huffington, and civil
rights leader and Congressman John Lewis.

The Hurst Community Fund expanded the Institutes seminars for young people
in Aspen, and throughout the Roaring Fork Valley, by introducing a Great Ideas

For more than 60 years, this premier roundtable has challenged leaders
in every field to think more critically and deeply. The seminar is a unique
opportunity to step away from the demands of the present and reflect with
other leaders in moderated, text-based Socratic dialogue on the concept of
a good and just society: What is it, how does it become a reality, and what
is our role in making it happen? The settings in Aspen, Colorado, and on
Marylands Eastern Shore are ideal for rejuvenating the mind, body, and spirit
of participants who emerge personally renewed and professionally refocused.

This program has provided a forum for emerging young leaders from various
professions to explore contemporary issues through expert-moderated dialogue
for nearly 20 years. It also provides the opportunity for participants to enter
a diverse professional network, as well as the broader range of the Institutes
programs. Its weekend-long seminars in Aspen, Colorado, and abroad, as well
as daylong seminars in major US cities, are values-based Socratic explorations

In a longstanding collaboration with the Association of American Colleges and

Universities, these seminars engage faculty, senior academic administrators,
and college presidents in an exchange of ideas about education, citizenship,
and the global polity. Sessions address the need for a liberal arts institutions
faculty and leadership to exchange ideas with colleagues from other colleges
and disciplines while exploring the ideas and values that underlie their
teaching. Modeled after the Aspen Seminar and offered at the Institutes Wye
River campus near the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland, the seminars focus on
issues such as individual rights and responsibilities and the public purpose of
education. Wye Faculty Seminars celebrated their 30th anniversary in 2013.

AspenX is a high-tech and high-touch Institute program for high school

students that connects the virtual learning of Khan Academy with inperson seminars. This spring, 20 students participated in a seminar at
the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, where they rewrote the
Fourth Amendment with Independence Hall providing the backdrop.
All of the students had watched online Khan academy lessons with
Institute-produced videos featuring US Supreme Court Associate Justices
Anthony Kennedy and Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Lessons also featured the
moderator of the day, Jeffrey Rosen, president and CEO of the National
Constitution Center. Thousands of other students had participated in
the lessons online in an official partnership with Khan Academy, one of
the largest online learning platforms, which provides a free world class
education to anyone, anywhere. In the fall of 2015, students in the San
Francisco Bay area will meet to discuss two seminar topics: American
diplomacy and privacy/civil liberties. They will use video lessons the
Institute recently developed for Toolbox for American Diplomacy,
featuring Secretaries of State Madeleine Albright and Gen. Colin Powell,
Brookings Institution President Strobe Talbott, Harvard Professor Joe
Nye, former Under Secretary for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs Tara

The Aspen Global Leadership Network is a worldwide community of

successful, high-integrity, action-oriented leaders committed to making the
world a better place. Fellows are selected in groups of 20 to be part of one
of 13 geographic or sector-specific initiatives around the world all modeled
after the Aspen Institute flagship Henry Crown Fellowship Program. They enter
this experience having demonstrated a great deal of personal success and
leave it inspired to make a greater mark on their communities and the world.
Fellowship gatherings provide space for introspection, probing dialogue, and
problem solving. Each Fellow is asked to bring his or her leadership to bear
on a pressing societal concern by launching a new project or venture. From
fighting rare genetic diseases, to providing healthy meals to school children,
to battling corruption, Fellows bring their entrepreneurial spirit to bear on a
variety of critical issues.
Today, the Aspen Global Leadership Network numbers more than 2,000
Fellows in 49 countries and continues to grow. The Network connects Fellows
through forums like the online Fellow Exchange, as well as regular events like
the Aspen Action Forum, an annual gathering that connects Aspen Global
Leadership Network Fellows and other leaders from Aspen Institute programs
and partners, spurring them to move from thought to action.

The Franklin Project hosted a National Service Summit at
Gettysburg, where participants pledged millions of dollars for
national service and announced several new service corps.
The second annual Aspen Action Forum gathered more
than 320 action-oriented fellows from around the world to
focus on results-driven leadership.
The 21st annual Summer Celebration dinner honored
historian Doris Kearns Goodwin and political advisor and
speechwriter to Presidents Kennedy and Johnson Richard N.
Goodwin with Public Service Awards.
The Aspen Institute Program on Citizenship & American
Identity launched with Citizen University founder Eric Liu at
the helm.
The eighth Wye Fellows Program season opened with
FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler in conversation with former
Chairman Al Sikes.
The sixth annual Washington Ideas Forum, presented by
The Atlantic and the Aspen Institute, moved to the Harman
Center for the Arts, and covered topics ranging from energy
and technology to health care and urban renewal.
The 2015 John P. McNulty Prize was awarded to Rjane
Woodroffe, Africa Leadership Initiative South Africa Fellow,
for her work building a new model of sustainable rural
development with the Bulungula Incubator in South Africa.

The Institutes 31st Annual Awards Dinner featured

comedian Stephen Colbert introducing Lynda Resnick,
Roll Global vice chairman and recipient of the 2015
Corporate Leadership Award. Reed Hastings, Henry Crown
Fellow and Netflix co-founder, received the Henry Crown
Leadership Award.
In December 2014, US Rep. John Lewis received the
Preston Robert Tisch Award in Civic Leadership in New York
City. After the award presentation, Lewis spoke with NPRs
Michel Martin about his remarkable life and the continued
push to overcome racial discrimination in America.
The Sports and Society Programs Project Play Summit
identified ways to give every child access to an early, positive
experience in sports. Participants included US Surgeon
General Vivek Murthy, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman,
Olympic champion sprinter Allyson Felix, and Little League
World Series pitcher Mone Davis.
The Aspen Institute Center for Urban Innovation, which
includes the DC Urban Innovation Lab, was established to
support innovation focused on addressing social challenges
in underserved urban areas.
The 2015 Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence
recognized the nations best community colleges. Santa Fe
College in Gainesville, Florida earned the top award, part of
$1.1 million in total prizes.

 The Aspen Institute Community Dialogue on Healing the

Racial Divide met in St. Louis, Missouri, to address race relations in
the United States.
The Center for Native American Youth and the White House
co-hosted a convening to discuss Generation Indigenous, a
national initiative to support Native American Youth. The convening
included remarks from First Lady Michelle Obama and four
Cabinet members.
Monica Lozano joined the Institute to chair the Latinos and
Society Program, a new initiative dedicated to increasing the
awareness of the growing Latino community and its contribution to
all aspects of American society.
In partnership with the White House, and with support from
Cabinet secretaries and the vice president, the Institutes Skills for
Americas Future facilitated the launch of UpSkill America, a national
coalition to provide education and training to American workers.
The Aspen Institute Arts Program named artist and photographer
JR, organist Cameron Carpenter, and actress Goldie Hawn as the
2015 Harman-Eisner Artists in Residence.
The Board of Trustees elected Yahoo Global News Anchor Katie
Couric to be a new member.
The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and the
Aspen Institute Arts Program, under the leadership of Deborah
Rutter and Damian Woetzel, presented a daylong Arts Summit
discussing how arts can address societys most pressing issues.
The program featured Yo-Yo Ma, David Brooks, Spike Lee, Sonia
Sotomayor, and activist Ai Weiwei via video.
The Aspen Institute, in partnership with the Greenville
Health System, launched the Health Innovators Fellowship in
2015. Under Rima Cohen, the programs managing director,
the Fellowship aims to strengthen the leadership of innovators
across the health-care ecosystem and to connect, inspire, and
challenge them to create new approaches to improve the health
and well-being of all Americans.

In 2014, the Aspen Institute launched the Aspen Journal

of Ideas as a way to capture essays, conversations, and
opinions from the thought leaders of the Institute community. The goal of the Journal is to highlight important ideas,
flesh out innovative policy solutions to pressing issues,
and tell stories about good policy that will change lives.

The Aspen Institute Japan is a nonprofit organization committed to

enhancing values-based leadership in contemporary society. Evolved
from the Tokyo liaison office of the Aspen Institute and Aspen
Institute Japan Council, AIJ was formally established in 1998. Its
flagship program has been the Nippon Aspen Executive Seminar. The Institute offers
three seminars annually, providing the leaders and future leaders of Japan with reflective experiences through moderator-led dialogue based on extensive readings of texts
from both classic and contemporary authors and from the Western and non-Western
world. In addition to the seminars, the Institute offers other executive seminars tailored
to the needs of national and local government officials and young business executives.

Established in June 2012, the Aspen Institute Prague is

a regional platform for policy innovation and nonpartisan
dialogue with an operational focus in Central Europe. The

Aspen Institute Mxico launched in March 2014 in Mexico

City as a nonpartisan center for debate and discussion. One
of its main objectives is to foster the development of young
leaders and their networks, promoting values and principles of democracy, such as freedom, the rule of law, and economic efficiency;
and to expand their relations with rising leaders from other countries in the
region. The activities are divided into seminars, policy and public programs,
and leadership initiatives.
