My Professional Development Plan

Year 1:
Personal
1. I will perform service or volunteer work once a month for the Touro University
Occupational Therapy Program or for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
2. I will go to the gym and perform aerobic exercise at least four times a week
3. I will create a budget for each semester of the school year and stick to it.
Career
1. I will research early intervention opportunities for occupational therapy in Los
Angeles, CA and look on the AOTA website for additional information on this area of
occupational therapy
2. I will find a mentor or occupational therapist who I can email my professional
questions to.
3. I will begin to narrow down what areas of occupational therapy I would like to
observe during Level I fieldwork.
Educational
1. I will get at least 6 hours of sleep per night as to be better prepared for school
2. I will only have one unexcused tardy per semester.
3. I will study or do homework each day (excluding Sunday) for at least 4 hours
outside of the classroom
Recreation/Leisure
1. I will read one book for pleasure per semester.
2. I will go out with my friends from the OT 16 cohort once a month
3. I will go out with my friends from church once a month
Year 3:
Personal
1. I will get my own apartment or house in Southern California
2. I will buy a basset hound puppy and name him Fitzwilliam. He will wear a collar
that has a bowtie on it.
3. I will date regularly with the intention of getting married
Career
1. I will passed the NBCOT and obtain a license to practice occupational therapy in
the state of California.

2. I will obtain employment as an occupational therapist working in early


intervention
3. I will maintain my membership with AOTA and participate in AOTA events
Educational
1. I will fulfill all continuing education requirements for licensed occupational
therapists in the state of California
2. I will seek opportunities to learn about other disciplines I come in contact with.
3. I will achieve an AOTA certification for pediatrics
Recreation/Leisure
1. I will learn a new sport
2. I will take a class on sewing from a community recreation center
3. I will continue to read 3 books for pleasure per year
Year 5:
Personal
1. I will get married and being establishing my home with my new husband.
2. I will create a plan to finish paying off my loans
3. I will continue to implement a regular exercise plan which an emphasis on aerobic
exercises
Career
1. I will begin seeking opportunities to be a case manager
2. I will talk to my employer about opportunities for advancement within my facility
3. I will begin researching the requirements for opening my own practice and
financial plan for opening my own practice.
Educational
1. I will begin taking on students as a fieldwork coordinator
2. I will increase awareness about what occupational therapy is within my
community
3. I will complete 4 additional continuing education units than the minimum
required to maintain my license as an occupational therapist in California
Recreation/Leisure
1. I will start a book club that will meet at my home once a month
2. I will vacation outside of the state of California once a year
3. I will write a blog about my family and my life in Southern California
Year 10:

Personal:
1. I will begin to make financial investments and obtaining real estate
2. I will finish paying off my school loans and my husbands school loans ( if
applicable)
Career
1. I will begin a non-profit organization that provides services for members of
my community who need occupational therapy services but lack the means
to obtain them
2. I will begin contributing to research concerning early intervention and
occupational therapy
Educational
1. I will write questions for the NBCOT and create study tools for the exam
2. I will complete 8 additional continuing education units more than the
minimum amount required by the state of California
Recreation
1. I will vacation outside of the country at least once a year
2. I will start making jam twice a year with my mother.
