Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson students will have the opportunity to demonstrate their
ability to:
Experiment with fractions and equal parts
Recognise equivalent fractions
Identify fractions within shapes and the size of the parts
Resources
The following resources will be required:
Coloured shapes (a4 pages cut into different equal shapes representing
halves, quarters, thrids, fifths, sixths, eighths)
A4 white paper x 25
Black markers
Glue, scissors etc
Fraction flag resource
Student Prior Knowledge
Prior to this lesson, students already be able to:
Identify various fractions
Recognise equivalent fractions
Identify the numerator and denominator of a fraction
Recognise fractions within shapes

Lesson Procedure
Motivation and Lesson Introduction

Differentiation

Procedure and Lesson Content
Allow time for students to create their fraction
flags
Direct students who complete their flag to fill in
the fraction flag worksheet for their flag.
Use student examples to show how they are using
fractions
When they have completed ask students to hand in
their flags and their worksheets so that we can put
them around the room
Lesson Conclusion
Ask students to clean up the rubbish and to put their
materials away, ready for lunch/next lesson.
Hang up student work in the classroom
