in the final grade.

Effective Grading Practices

Ensure that grades reflect mastery of content.

Record grades in PowerSchool within five school days of the assignments due date.

Assign the initial score earned (no less than 50) for an assignment or assessment on which the
student made a concerted attempt.

Assign an initial score of zero (0) to an assignment or assessment on which a student made no
attempt or which is missing.

Assignments

Late work and make-up work must be accepted by all teachers in accordance with the
procedures established by the school and CMS.

Arrangements for completing the work should be made within five school days of the students
return to school. Arrangements should include a schedule for completion of the work. For middle
and high school students, the student must initiate the contact with the teacher.

In all circumstances, homework and other assignments should be accepted, even when turned
in after the designated due date.

Late Work

If the student was present in class on the due date, the work may be given less credit. There will
be a 10 point deduction each day. Any work submitted by a student after 5 days can not
receive a grade lower than a 50.

If the student was not present in class on the due date because of an excused absence, full
credit must be given for the completed work.

If the student was not present in class on the due date because of an unexcused absence, the
work may be given less credit.

79% Mastery

Students who fail to score at least 79% on an assessment (major tests or formal assessments)
will have the opportunity to retake the assessment once.

Students will have opportunities during the school day and before/after school to gain the deficit
knowledge necessary to demonstrate mastery when the assessment is re-administered.

Re-tests should cover the same material, but not be identical to the original test.

Tutoring is required before re-testing.

The maximum retest score a student can earn is 79%.

Re-tests should take place within 5 days of the original feedback date.

T/F Questions
1. Teachers should not provide the re-test options to students if they do not
stay before/after school.
2. Teachers must update grades every week.
3. If a student just sits in class, making no effort, they should at least receive
a 50 for graded work.
4. Students can retake a test as many times as they want until they score a 79.
5. A minimum of 4 formal assessments must be given each quarter.
