RAFT Row 1
Objective: Students will be able to understand and ask questions about a book.

Common Core Standard- CC.1.2: Reading Informational Text: Students read, understand, and
respond to informational text- with emphasis on comprehension, making connections among
ideas and between texts with focus on textual evidence: CC.1.2.1 B: Ask and answer questions
about key ideas in a text.
ISTE Standards: Creativity and Innovation (b) and Research and Information Fluency (a)
Student Role: The students will be teachers of a first grade class.
Audience: The students they will be teaching.
Format: Typed questions and answers about their book.
Topic: Being able to read and understand a book at their level.

Directions:
1. The teacher will read the story Our Cool School by Judy Katschke.
2. The teacher will then ask students questions about the book and have the students ask
questions about the book as well.
3. The teacher will then tell the students that they are going to pretend to be a teacher. They
need to pick out a book and read it. Once they have read their book, they need to get a
computer and use it to write down questions about the book and their answers as well.
4. The teacher will be walking around helping students if they need any help.
5. The teacher will then put the students into groups once they have finished their questions.
The students will read each other their books and ask the questions they have typed up
and see how their answers compare.
6. The students will then turn in their questions and answers for a grade.

Assessment: Students will need to read a book of their choice and then create questions to ask
their group. A minimum of 10 questions and answers are required. 2 points for each question
with an answer and 1 point for only a question and no answer. Total points is 20.

RAFT Row 2
Objective: Students will be able to identify what groups are in their community.
PA Standard: 8.2: Pennsylvania History; 8.2.1.A- Identify groups of people who contribute to a
community

ISTE Standard: Critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making (c), Technology
operations and concepts (a)
Student Role: Learning about what groups are in the community
Audience: Students peers
Format: SMART board and a quiz
Topic: Community groups

Directions:
1. The teacher will start the lesson by showing the students an interactive slide show about
what groups are in their community. The teacher will place pictures on the slide show as
well.
2. The teacher will then place many pictures of each community group on a document.
There will also be names of each community group.
3. The students will each have a turn to take the community group member and place it with
their name. (Using the SMART board)
4. After a few times of practicing on the SMART board, the teacher will give the students a
quiz of sorting the picture with the name.
5. The students will turn in their quiz when they are done and do something quietly until the
whole class has finished their quiz.

Assessment: The students will practice, as a class, sorting the community groups. Each student
will then take a quiz sorting the community workers on their own. The quiz is worth 20 points.

RAFT Row 3
Objective: The student will be able to write a story
PA standard: 1.5: Quality of Writing; 1.5.1.F: Use grade appropriate conventions of language
when writing and editing, spell common and frequently used words correctly, use capital letters
correctly, punctuate correctly, and begin to use correct grammar and sentence formation.
ISTE Standard: Research and Information Literacy (b,c,d)
Student Role: The student is an author.

Audience: The readers of their story or their peers.


Format: A written paper of the topic of their choice using research
Topic: Writing mechanics/grammar and spelling

Directions:
1. The teacher will explain to the students that they are going to be writing a story about the
topic of their choice.
2. The teacher will then have the students write down what their topic is going to be about.
The teacher must make sure that student can research information about this topic.
3. The teacher will then have the students get onto the computer and research their topic
using the website http://www.britannica.com/ .
4. The teacher will be walking around and making sure students are following directions.
The teacher will also help the students find information about their topic if they need
help.
5. Once the students have written down their research, they are ready to start their
assignment. The students will work on their assignment.
6. The students will turn in the assignment when they have completed it.

Assessment: Students are to write a one page report on the topic of their choice. The topic can be
baseball, basketball, any occupations, or animals. They will research their topic using the
computer and teacher guidance. Their one page report must be all grammatically correct and
words should be spelled correctly. Students will also need to use their research in paper. The
point of this assignment is to learn new information and be able to write it down using correct
writing mechanics. The assignment is worth 50 points.
