I am available for student help at lunch Monday-Tuesday and ThursdayFriday. I am available after school by appointment. Additional tutoring with a
PA can be arranged Monday-Thursday in the library.

Course Content:
n Assessment and Orientation

3-4 weeks

o To begin the year students will complete a variety of assignments


to determine the skills that they have in Language Arts and areas
that need to be developed.
n Class Novel Study

4-6 weeks

o Students will complete questions and assignments based off of


the novel Silverwing. These assignments will be a combination of
individual and group work. A final project will be created where
students will identify, explain and represent themes from the
novel.
n Writing Choices

4-6 weeks

o Students will complete a variety of writing assignments to explore


authors voice, word choices, and different writing styles. Different
writing styles such as, paragraphs, poetry, and stories will be
used to demonstrate writing skills.
n Coraline

4-6 weeks

o Students will explore this graphic novel using the Sign Post
technique.
n Film Study

3-4 weeks

o Students will learn different types of shots, angles, methods and


sounds used in film.

Expectations
Arrive on time and prepared
NO Junk food! This includes pop/iced tea!
Cell phones may periodically be used in class for instructional
purposes. Students will be informed of this. Unless otherwise told to
have them, cell phones are not to be in the room. If they are not in the
students lockers, they can be left on my desk. Students caught with
cell phones during instructional time will have them taken away until
the end of class. Second offence will have the cell phone held till the
end of the day. By the third offence, parents will receive a phone call.
Homework is a part of Language Arts. There is an expectation that
assignments be turned in on time. Extensions can be granted if the
student arranges to meet with me to come up with a game plan.
Respect the learning opportunities and environment. Work
collaboratively with classmates.
Cheating/Plagiarism: dont do it! Possible consequences include:
redoing assignment, receiving a zero, removal from course.

Assessment:
Formative/Summative:
All assignments are important and need to be completed. Some
assignments will show a mark that will count toward a final grade. Others
will be marked completed when finished; these formative assignments are
essential to achieving success in the summative assignment.
Mark Break Down
Years work: 80%
Final exam: 20%
Reading
Students are required to bring a teacher-approved reading material with
them to every class. This could be a fiction or a non-fictional book. Comics
and Magazines are not acceptable reading materials. Classes will often
begin with 20 minutes of silent reading, so its best to be prepared! In
addition, students will participate in book club, where they will be required
to be interviewed about what they are reading. This will be further discussed
in class.
