(CFD Simulation of Industrial Cenirugal Pump
4. Meshing
Duc to the complexity ofthe goometry unstructured grid was developed (8). Inflation layers wore added
along the blade surfaces to capture the boundary layer regime. For CFD simulation, only the fuk! volume
was considered and meshing vas done only on that volume. Figure 2 shows the meshed Hid volume with
unstructured rid

Inter: Absolute pressure of 1,99 bar corresponding to 10 m head was given as inlet boundary condition,
(Onitet: Mass flow rate was applied atthe outlet face of impeller.
Walt; Blade surfaces, hub and shroud were mexcled as @ wall boundary condition with no sip flow
condition.
Turbulence Model: Spear ses transport (SST) model with 5% turbulence intensity was used (9),
‘53 Mesh Independence
‘Theoretically, the erorsin the solution related tothe grid must keep reducing foran increasingly fine mesh
The diseharge head at nominal flow conditions was taken as the parameter to be evaluated at grids of
liferent sizes and the influence of the mesh size on the salution was determined. Another sty involved(CFD Simulation of Industrial Cenirugal Pump 5
the variation of pressure along line inthe uid domain. On the basis of figure 3, mesh number 4 which
corresponds to S mm mesh size and #93229 elements was chosen for simulations.

‘54.1 Pressure and Velocity Distribution
‘The distribution of pressure and velocity inthe impeller were the key results that were required from these
‘simulations. The figures below show ths cistibution at diferent flow rates. Af lower flow rates, discharge
Inead was greater than at higher low rates, The pressures on the presure sie of Dads were greater than
those on the suction side. As the flow rate increased, low pressure areas inereased in size and the high
‘pressure region visible at the out, shrink.
“The kinetic energy of uid increases in the impeller, thus increasing dynamic pressure. The velocity
distribution shows that velocity of fui increased a it moved radially outward.

tthe flow mate of about 466 Ips, negative pressure started developing near the leading edge of bladss. As
the flow rte increased, the negative pressure region als increased in area. The low pressure region moved
‘diay outward as the low rate increased. In this region, pressure was found to be lower than vapor(CFD Simulation of Industrial Cenirugal Pump "
