MEC 301: HEAT TRANSFER

Tutorial 1

1. The roof of an electrically heated home is 6 m long, 8 m wide,

and 0.25 m thick, and is made of a flat layer of concrete
whose thermal conductivity is k = 0.8 W/m C. The
temperatures of the inner and the outer surfaces of the roof
one night are measured to be 15C and 4C, respectively, for a
period of 10 hours. Determine (a) the rate of heat loss through
the roof that night and (b) the cost of that heat loss to the
home owner if the cost of electricity is Rs 10/kWh.
Ans: 1.69kW, Rs 169
2. The wall of an industrial furnace is constructed from 0.15-mthick reclay brick having a thermal conductivity of 1.7 W/m
_ K. Measurements made during steady state operation reveal
temperatures of 1400 and 1150 K at the inner and outer
surfaces, respectively. What is the rate of heat loss through a
wall that is 0.5 m by 1.2 m on a side?
Ans: 1.7kW
3. Consider a person standing in a room maintained at 22C at
all times. The inner surfaces of the walls, floors, and the
ceiling of the house are observed to be at an average
temperature of 10C in winter and 25C in summer.
Determine the rate of radiation heat transfer between this
person and the surrounding surfaces if the exposed surface
area and the average outer surface temperature of the person
are 1.4 m2 and 30C, respectively.
Ans: 163W, 43W

4. Consider a person standing in a breezy room at 20C.

Determine the total rate of heat transfer from this person if the
exposed surface area and the average outer surface
temperature of the person are 1.6 m2 and 29C, respectively,
and the convection heat transfer coefficient is 6 W/m2 C.
Take emissivity of the person as 0.95.
Ans: 168.1 W
5. Consider the case of cooling of an electronic chip as shown in
figure. And find out the temperature of the surface of the chip
after assuming heat transfer from the upper surface only,
which has the dimension of 1.0 cm X 0.8 cm.
T = 220C
