POETRY TERMS YOU SHOULD KNOW

1. Line- Literally, a line of poetry

2. Stanza- A group of lines in a poem, like a “poem paragraph”, separated by a space

3. Rhyme- Words that sound the same at the end of the word (note that they do not need to be
spelled the same as long as they SOUND the same)

Example: ball, tall


Tinge, hinge
Speak, meek

4. Rhyme Scheme- The pattern created by the rhyming words at the END of lines in the poem,
use letters to label the rhyme scheme (A, B, C, etc. See below)
Remember: same sound=same letter
new sound=new letter

5. Rhythm- The beat of the poem

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, A

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
