Narrative

The School of the Future High School will be on the Hawaiian island
Honolulu. The city is specifically Punaluu. The island has a tropical climate
which could have a positive and negative impact to a design. Besides taking
the climate into a count, how environmentally friendly it will be needs to be
as well. There are many different ways to save power and energy that can be
included in the school.
The Hawaiian Islands get about 24 inches of rain a year which needs
be a factor in the design. Hawaii has a high risk of volcanic eruption so the
safety of the students is a top priority. The Islands climate is 80 degrees all
year round which should not affect our buildings structure. An influence how
ever is that bricks and some materials have to be imported which is a
disadvantage. The material that is needed is concrete because it is available
and on the island and is simple to work with.
The energy source will be from solar panels they will be placed on the
roof and every accessible spot. The light rain that occurs almost every day
will actually help the solar panels. By keeping the dust off and removing
other particles. These solar panels will provide a source of power if the public
grid goes down. Primarily these panels will reduce the cost of the schools
electricity. It has been decided to use solar panels without battery storage
because we want to use the energy as it comes in; this option would be more
cost effective. The solar panels would be saving energy in live time which

reduces total cost for our school and district. The solar panels that are being
employing give out up to 265 watts of power. The size of the solar panel is
65.94 inches in length and 39.41 inches wide and 1.22 inches tall the cost of
one panel is 329 dollars. The total number of panels we will use is to be
announced
Its the teachers and administrators job to keep students invested in
education while also having teacher and student interaction in a healthy way
which will promote positive learning. There should be halls for a specific
curriculum. Rooms should be comfortable and promote learning; the halls
need to allow students to be able to get to class on time and at everyones
convenience.
Adjustable lighting along with smart boards in most rooms for core
curriculum as well. All teachers will have smart boards, laptops, projectors,
marker board, and printer/paper. Smart boards cost about 800 United States
dollars and will be put in each classroom. These boards have the ability to be
written on and have a document on the screen. These boards are also able to
control the screen of the computer; this function can be disabled for
convince.
Teacher laptops will be connected into the school database allowing
the teachers to store all documents and data they need. The teachers
laptops have every program that is needed for basic operations and some
advanced ones such as google sketch-up. Even with the advance of

technology, standard dry erase boards are still needed in case the given
technology fails there is still a form of board to write on.
Teachers will be given a Dell Inspiron 23 Touch-Screen All-In-One
computer and also will be used in the library and in classrooms. Students will
be issued a 32G Microsoft Surface 2. Devices will be issued at to beginning of
the year and collected at the end of the school year. These devices will be
used for homework, classwork, and keeping in contact with teachers via
email.
Instead of having standard florescent lighting like in Northwest High
School, the school will have light dimmers in every classroom. The light
dimmers help save energy by letting you control the wattage output, uses
less fossil fuels and natural gasses, and reduces the risk of air and water
pollution. The light dimmers save you money and energy without sacrificing
comfort and sustainability. These dimmers also provide a teacher with more
lighting options in the class room for the perfect amount of light.
To decide what the theme of the school of the future would be, the
design team brain stormed and presented their ideas to the team. We
compromised to have the best outcome for the school; all ideas were
explained with a fair chance before being removed from contention. With
compromise and fair chance being practiced in everyday meetings, the
design team has been able to form a clear idea of how the school should feel

Students should be in a comfortable learning environment which is why

student equality will be an important factor in the new school to ensure the
happiness and the ability for the students to learn at their best. Students will
not be harassed because of Ethnic group, skin color, religion, creed, sexual
orientation, mental or physical disability, or gender. Students will use the
restroom of their physical gender, unless the student is currently undergoing
physical transformation, in this case they are allowed to use the restroom of
the gender they are changing into.
For the safety concerns for autistic students, walls cannot be painted
red, yellow, or orange. Flooring in the hallways is to be standard commercial
tile and classes with be commercial carpeting. However if class room is
designated to be a lab or workshop than these rooms will have commercial
tile also. The hallways in our school need to be wide enough to allow for
easy movement throughout the school the size of the hallways is.
As the design team we are faced with a problem of making a school
sustainable to the climate of Hawaii that also follows the rules and
regulations of the Hawaiian School District Policies. Our goal is to create a
healthy environment where students can learn and feel more at home. We
want the students to be comfortable so they can present ideas in front of
other students and in their daily lives outside of school as well.
In the research process for the designing phase, we looked for comfort,
efficiency, and atmosphere. We plan to incorporate cool and warm pastel

colored accents throughout the school such as light blue and olive green
allowing students to feel refreshed and be able to concentrate. To come up
with the ideas for the floor plan of the school we looked at other
schools/buildings that welcomed us or seemed more efficient.
Some new high school designs incorporate a courtyard, so we
implemented the idea of the courtyard in the center of our school floor plan.
This courtyard can be eaten in or used for outdoor learning purposes the
courtyard could either be maintained by a student class or club like
gardening or could be maintained by professional landscapers.
Our regular sized class room is 24 feet by 32 feet. While our larger labs
and workshops are. The team decided that the standard and regular Pre- AP
math and science classes should be closer together since those classes go
hand in hand. Language and social studies will be slightly separated but
close for class to class movement.
The team agreed that the school would have two academies, S.T.E.M.
and A.M.A.T, because they would be very beneficial for the students. An
academy such as S.T.E.M exposes students to high volumes of engineering,
mathematics, science and technology thus giving students in the program a
chance to get scholarships to universitys and a high probability of receiving
a job in an engineering field. The A.M.A.T academy exposes students to their
choice of three professions in television and video game making fields giving

children enrolled in the program a head start in the fields of video game
design television and news appearance and stage and sound.
Every stair case that leads to a protected lobby must have an upper
viewing platform. Stairs cannot have more than 16 risers or no less than 2.
Each should be higher than 175mm with a head room of 2000mm. hand rails
should be provided on each side of the stairs and be at a height no less than
850mm and no more than 1100mm. they should not exceed the wall more
than 90 mm. Supreme class sizes for high-schoolers should be 26:1. The
state has no class size restrictions above 3rd grade.
The cafeteria will have a great variety of options for students. There
will be Pizza Hut, Panda Express, and Chick-Fil-A. There will also be a regular
lunch line for those students who get free or reduced lunch. Vending
machines with approved drinks and snacks will be located in the cafeteria as
well. More vending machines will be located in appointed areas such as
hallways, and or teachers lounge as well. The vending machines not only
accept cash but
For safety and security purposes all students require I.Ds and the
school needs some additional security options on campus. Stairs must have
distinct colored rails on both sides of the stairs and must have a non- slip
surface. All two stories stair cases need a window and emergency lights that
follow safety regulations; if the stairs have doors at the end, the doors
cannot affect the radius the landing platform.

The school will also need elevators, ramps, and stairs that can be
easily climbed and descended. This will especially help the disabled in
getting around the school safer. All of these ideas will help with the overall
health of the school and will keep it a safer place. The school needs to
capable of handling disabled children.
When a student goes to a new school they will be introduced to new
diseases that they normally do not experience. That is why a new school
needs at least 2 trained nurses that are certified in CPR, Pharmaceutical, and
etc. The school will also need to be prepped for any accidents so a basic first
aid bag would be needed in every classroom and in science and engineering/
woodshop labs a complete first aid kit would be needed because more
serious injuries can occur in these rooms. The school will also need fire exits,
doors that lock, fire alarms that can be easily accessed, and doors and
windows that can be easily covered in case of a gas leak. All of these will
help the student body as a whole in case of a disaster, fire, or a break in. All
doors must at a minimum 36 inches wide so those in wheel chairs and with
other physical disabilities can have easy access to the room. While exterior
need windows and be able to be protected from bullets and other weather
related hazards or sources of harm and the exterior doors should be water
tight. To prevent flooding to the school on the first floor. The water-proofing
of the doors is as simple as putting weather stripping round the edges of the
doors and using extra sealant around the window area.

For safety and security purposes all students require I.Ds and the
school needs some additional security options on campus. The crime rate in
Hawaii 10,443 crimes total per year on average. The crime break down is
1,366 violent crimes such as shootings or stabbings. The other 9,077 are
petty crimes that do not pose a large threat to the school. This total number
of crimes breaks down to about 29 crimes per day. The violent crime number
breaks down to about 3 to 4 per day this is the number we are concerned
about. One security option is on site police from the county or local police of
the city if this cant happen then the school needs to hire security through an
agency. Security options include remote locking doors and an advanced
office check in system. This system will allow all visitors in the building to be
tracked on and off site. These systems will include printable stickers that can
be tracked. This will help prevent crimes within the school.
The special on site remote locking doors can be activated from an
undisclosed room in the office or if the district headquarters is contacted
they can lock them from the headquarters. This way if there is an on campus
violent crime the school can be completely compartmentalized. These doors
can also be unlocked on site by law enforcement door by door. There will also
be surveillance cameras around the building. The footage from the cameras
will be recorded on site and can be pulled from a server by the time and day.
These cameras will be in every class room and in all hallways.

Our school will be one of the most advanced if not the most advanced
and technologically ahead of any other school in Hawaii.
