Introduction
•  The capital of Haiti is Port-au-Prince.
Haiti was discovered by Christopher
Columbus in 1492. It was a French
territory in 1804. Haiti was the first black
republic to gain it's independence.
Geography
What does the land look like?

•  Haiti is shaped like a birds head with an


open beak. Haiti shares the island
known as Hispaniola with the bordering
neighbor, Dominican Republic. It is filled
with mountains and hills. Like most
islands the weather is hot all during the
year.

What does the flag look like and what does it mean?

•  Haiti`s flag has a


royal palm tree on it.
This symbolizes
victory and success
for the Haitian
people.

What language is spoken? What are some words in this language?

spoken in Haiti is
Creole at home and
they learn French in
school.
Food
What special food is eaten in this country?

Beignets is made from bananas or


plantains and is eaten in Haiti during
carnival time.
Celebrations
Are there any different celebrations?

•  Haiti has carnival every year. Carnival is


a festival in the streets. Carnival is
celebrated with games and food.
People wear masks to hide who they
are as they dance in the streets.

he was a poet and
an activist.
