Math 10-Geometry and Finance Course Information

Ms. Amy Merry amy.merry@nbed.nb.ca

Welcome to Grade 10 Math!
If parents and any students would like to receive any notification for upcoming tests
and/or major projects then feel free to email me at the address provided above and I will
add your name to my list.
This course is only one semester and students must take the Numbers, Relations, and
Functions course second semester which is a graduation requirement. I expect students to
work hard, both in school as well as at home.

Textbook:
Math Works 10. Textbooks will be assigned to each student and a specific book will be
assigned. That same textbook must be turned in at the end of the semester. If you lose
your book you will be to pay $80 to replace it. Books will be used in class and/or handouts
will be provided.

Units of Study:
Chapter One: Unit Pricing and Currency Exchange
Chapter Two: Earning an Income
Chapter Three: Financial Services
Chapter Four: Systems of Measurement and Conversion
Chapter Five: Mass, Temperature, and Volume
Chapter Six: Surface Area, Volume, and Capacity
Chapter Seven: Angles and Parallel Lines
Chapter Eight: Trigonometry of Right Triangles

Materials:
binder/notebook/loose-leaf
textbook
quiz notebook
pencils/erasers
scientific calculator
ruler
Note: Pens should not to be used in math class.

Evaluation:
Each term, students marks are calculated using the following evaluations:
Tests/Quizzes/Assignments 45%
Class mark/Formative 10%
Midterm 15%
Exam 30%
To be successful in this course, a student must achieve a final mark of 60%.

Homework:
Homework is marked based on completion, not on accuracy. The homework will be
discussed and corrected in class so that students have the correct information.

Tests/Quizzes:
Generally, students will be given approximately one weeks notice before a test, but
quizzes may only get a day or two notice.
Missed tests are to be written by the second day the student returns. Students
are responsible for arranging this with me. Missed tests can be written during class time
(with the teachers permission), working period, noon hour or after school. To be eligible
to write a missed test, the student must have a doctors or parents note with a legitimate
reason for being absent. An unexcused absence (skipping, for example), will result in a
zero for that test.
Assignments/Projects:
Assignments are to be handed in on the due date. Students who are absent the
day an assignment is due must pass in the assignment on the first day they return.
Assignments that are not passed in on the due date are considered late. Marks will
be deducted for each day the assignment is late. It is still better to pass the assignment
in then get a zero.
Absences:
Any student who is absent is required to bring in a note describing the reason for
their absence. It is the students responsibility to find out what work they missed.
Extra Help/Tutoring:
If working period is not ideal then lunch hour or after school should be considered.
Extra help at noon hour will be available upon request. I will not set other specific times
for extra help but will be made available as long as I am given adequate notice.
Anyone experiencing difficulty should ask for help when they first realize they are
having trouble with the work. Generally, one topic will lead to another, and a lack of
understanding of the first topic will diminish the students ability to understand the next
concept. Students who wait until a day or two before a test to ask for help will find they
have little time to learn all of the topics they have missed. Also, due to meetings and
various other obligations, I cannot guarantee extra help to those students who wait for
the last minute.
Any student who fails a test, quiz, or assignment is strongly recommended to
attend tutoring. Topics that are tested throughout the semester will be on the exam as
well. Retests may be considered in some situations; however, there will be no retests
granted unless the student attends additional tutoring sessions. Also a list of tutors can
be made available upon request.
Thank you,
