Social Studies: Native American Indians

Grades 1st-3rd

Objectives: The Native American Indians were a huge part of the American culture of the United
States. The men were known as hunters, warriors, protectors and the women were to tend to their
offspring, and their homes, depending on the tribe. The students will be able to identify the
different Indian tribes: Algonquian, Iroquoian, Siouan and Powhatan by the culture, language,
customs, foods, homes and clothing. Students will be familiarized with the Native American
history, culture, and some of the issues they faced.

Materials: Books, First Peoples By Colin Galloway, Dragon Flys tale By Kristina Rodanas,
Thieves Road; the black Hills Betrayal and Custers By Terry Mort, Construction paper, glue,
scissors, worksheets(handouts), computer-access.

Suggested time: week 5 days

Procedures: Introduce to the students the history of the Native Americans, discuss Jamestown the
permanent settlement and how the Native Americans were forced to leave their settlement.
Students will be given an opportunity to give their prior knowledge on what they know about the
Native Americans. I will show the students visuals of the Native Americans on the smartboard
1) The student will work on KWL (what the student KNOWS, WANT TO KNOW, and what
the student LEARNED).

2) I will read the story The Black Hills Betrayal and Custers By Terry Mort. After
reading the story, we will discuss the story as a class. After the discussion, the students
will write six detailed sentences about the events that happened in the story, and an
illustration.
3) The students will learn about the following tribes: Algonquian, Iroquoian, Siouan, and
Powhatan. The students will learn about each tribes culture, food, clothing, shelter and
customs. I will show discuss each tribe individually by reading to them about each tribe
as well as showing them visuals. The students will create a flip book using construction
paper. The flip book will have each tribe name on each individual sheet, when the
students flip each page up, theyll see a top section and a bottom section. For each tribe,
the students will write facts about each specific group. The students will illustrate on the
bottom section of the language group, and they will add additional information as they
learn.
4) The students will be divided into groups in the classroom: Algonquian, Iroquoian, Sioux,
and the Powhatan. Each group will be given worksheets (handouts), the groups will
discuss amongst each other their culture, customs, food, shelter, jobs, religious beliefs,
traditions etc. The students are to compare and contrast their assigned group to other
groups. The students will be allowed to use the internet, books, etc. and they will be
allowed to move around the classroom.
5) The students will watch a video Native American documentary from YouTube on the
following tribes; Algonquian, Iroquoian, Sioux and the Powhatan. The students will
answer questions (handouts) that correspond to the video after watching it.
6) Students will watch a brain pop video on Native Americans after watching the brain
pop video, they will answer questions (handouts) that correspond to the brain pop
video. The students will work on a matching handout they will match the following

tribes Algonquian, Iroquoian, Sioux, and Powhatan to their culture, customs, shelter,
food, traditions, religions and etc.

Check for Understanding: I will ask the students questions after each lesson, and listen to their
responses to see how well they understand. I will the give students a 30 question multiple choice/
fill in the blank test. Students are to create a Tribe book using construction paper, and picture
handouts. The students will label each tribe and write detailed sentences about each specific
tribes culture, customs, religion, food, shelter etc., while labeling the pages with pictures that
correspond to each tribe. The tribe book will be a final grade of the students knowledge about
how well they understand the Native American culture.
