improve grammar and vocabulary skills
practice AP and SAT test-taking strategies

Creative Projects
Students make connects between the text and themselves or
between the text and the world.

Products include original music compositions, drawings,


retellings, movies, scripts.

In Class Timed Writing


We scaffold down from AP Language and AP Literature.
Fall Two class periods; 1 for planning, 1 for writing
Spring One class period; planning & writing on the same day

What textbooks do we use?


Elements of Literature (online)
Vocabulary from Classical Roots Level C
Available for $10.00 in room 1221
Variety of Novels
The Translator by Daoud Hari
The Odyssey by Homer (in our textbook)
The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare

(The Shakespeare Made Easy version is recommended.)

Once and Future King by T.H. White


*There is an independent novel unit during the 6th Six Weeks.
The list of books will be distributed during the 5th Six Weeks.

Do we need to buy the novels?


We encourage students to purchase their own novels, so
they may mark and take notes in the book.
If you would like to purchase these, they are available at
the Book Fair in the main commons.
The fair is sponsored by the Journalism department.
They will be open tonight until 9:00 PM.
Novels may also be purchased in the Cougar Den
throughout the school year.
Vocabulary Workbooks may be purchased from the
Journalism department in room 1221.

Homework
Reading may be required on weekends and/or
holidays.

Grades
Daily grades = 10% (homework, daily work)
Minor grades = 30% (timed writes, quizzes, etc.)
Major grades = 60% (tests, projects, etc.)
Major tests in English are on EVEN days.

Grades can be monitored using the Home Access


Center (HAC).

When are tutorials?


Tutorials are Thursdays and Fridays
from 2:50pm to 3:50pm.
Students must RSVP to tutorials via Remind.
Ms. Miller (1006) offers tutorials on Monday and
Wednesday beginning at 6:30am.

Students do not need to be failing to attend.
