Math 4 Today and Practice Our Problem
Solving (P.O.P.S) will be completed daily.
On Thursdays, your child will bring
home their Math 4 Today/P.O.P.S for the
week to review for Fridays Checkpoint.
Our math is hands-on and inquirybased. We use both Texas Go Math and
Investigations curriculum as we follow
the district scope and sequence.

Curriculum
Highlights
Reading
Reading lessons will be
presented in two parts during
each school day. The first part will focus on the main
objective being taught through the use of whole group
lessons. The second part will consist of the teacher
meeting with small groups for leveled guided reading
while students practice reading, writing, handwriting,
word work (spelling/spelling rules), grammar, and
dictionary skills (including context clues and multiple
meaning words). Through the use of Literacy Centers
students develop the daily habits of reading, writing,
and working independently that will lead to a lifetime
of literacy independence.

Curriculum
Highlights
Reading
CAFE is an acronym for
Comprehension, Accuracy,
Fluency, and Expanding Vocabulary, and the system
includes goal-setting with students in individual
conferences, developing small group instruction based
on clusters of students with similar goals, and
targeting whole-class instruction based on emerging
student needs. The strategies of the CAF system will
be used as a part of our reading instruction.

Snacks & Birthday

Treats
Students may bring a healthy snack that doesnt
require utensils.
Snacks are eaten inside during the designated time.
We encourage students to bring a reusable water
bottle.
Birthday treats should be prearranged with the teacher
and are served at 2:10 PM. Only prepackaged single
servings of cupcakes/cookies/healthy snacks and
napkins. Drinks and treat bags are not allowed, please
do not send these items.
Please make sure you inform your teacher if your snack
contains nuts or nut products in consideration of the
students who may have nut allergies.

Assignments
Occasionally students will have takehome assignments to be completed
at home and returned the following
day. If students have an assignment
to complete, it will be noted in the
homework section of their agenda.

Homework

Homework will be posted each Friday on teacher web pages

and will be due the following Friday.
Since we are a green school, hard copies of homework will not
be sent home.
In addition to posted assignments, students are also expected
to read a minimum of 4 books or chapters from a book on their
reading level. Students have a reading log in their agendas.
These reading logs should be updated every time they read
and do require parent signatures in order for your child to
receive credit for completing their weekly reading homework.
The reading log should be signed and returned each Friday with
homework. Students should also practice their math facts
each night. Please focus on multiplication and division facts.
Teacher web pages are also a great resource for online
educational activities to reinforce what is being learned at
school. Please check your teachers website weekly for
important updates.

Champ Change
Auction
Third grade teachers pay students using Champ
Change for using their virtues/habits.
On select Fridays, auctions are held in the classroom.
Students are encouraged to bring in any unwanted
toys, books or school supplies (please no electronics or
food!)
Students must have prior permission from their parents
before they bring any items to auction to sell to their
classmates. The highest bidder wins!
This is a great way for students to learn about
economics: when to spend and when to save along
with the value of money, how to count money and how
to add and subtract various denominations.

NEISD Grading
Policy
Students will be given one
opportunity to redo/retake any
assignment or test in which they
score 69% or below. The highest
grade a student can earn on any
retake is 70%.
Extra Credit work will not be given.

Expectations
Student Binders:
Binders will serve as a portfolio of all graded work and
will be brought home each week. Please leave all
graded papers in your childs binder.
At the end of the nine weeks all papers should be taken
out of binders.

Parent Signatures:
Agendas should be initialed daily in THE LEADER IN ME
tab as well as the DAILY AGENDA tab. If your child does
not have an agenda yet, they can be purchased tonight
for $8.00.
