Power Analysis for Electrical Systems A Work Experience Report by Kevin Bradshaw Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Texas A&M University PROB FOR COOP STUDENTS, ENGR 385 Spring 2015 42S Presented to Dr. Aydin I. Karsilayan Department of Fletrical and Computer Engineering Texas A&M University Approved by, 1-3 Communications, Mission Integration Division 10001 Jack Finney Blvd, Greenville, Texas 75402 ABSTRACT Facilitating power correctly through a system has been one of my favorite aspects that I've Jearned about working as an electrical engineer. Power diagrams require a lct more than just general drafting because of the research required to power a network of units reliably from a ‘general supply. By establishing a good basis on how different cables are used for particular unit, Thave been able fo lear how networks of systems operate. After researching power distribution diagrams, I have also learned several load balancing techniques. With this background, I have been abie to help design intemal connections for circuit breakers. Circuit beakers are very cssenfia to any unit for safety to the people using that unit and to the unit itself, Without knowing how to corectly connect and analyze these systems, facilitating power would cause @ Ihuge rise to an entire circuit L INTRODUCTION Jam curently working as an Electrical Engineering Co-op for L-3 Communications Mission Integration Division, L-3 Communications is one ofthe top defense companies in the nation specializing in aircraft maintenance and modifications andthe advancement of technology syateaus fora variety of uses, Siuce L-3 isa governuneut defense company, none ofthe projets that I have worked on willbe discussed specifically inthis report. My training has been focused ‘on wiring diagram drafting, eable assemblies, eonnector type research, circuit breaker boxes, and power analysis, Ia the past several months, Ihave leaned a lot about electrical engineering ‘concepts that are useful for my education and future career. “Most engineering firms use some sort of CAD tool for both 2D and 3D drawings to efficiently design parts precisely. I have had to use NX drafling by Siemens to make wiring iagrams fora variety of units and complex systems. NX drafting provides flexible design for us to create drawings that can easily be prepared and routed into physical electrical systems. In NX, ‘most standard symbols by the Institute of Eleirical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) for clectrical components such as diodes, resistors, and relays are used. Paired with NX, Siemens also provides the worl!’ leading Product Lifecycle Management platform, Teamcentr, in order te handle all our engineering in one software. Teamcenter isthe main software we primarily used ‘to find any document, diagram, part, or reference material t works as an enormous database for usta be able to work together efficiently ‘Asa Co-op engineer, I'm assigned to a mentor that gives me projects to work on that are checked through thee other engineers. After a wiring diagram is checked, it's ready to be released as an official drawing. A diagram is only then constructed after this series of checks is
