answeraquestion,theGovernment'srecentlyappointedschoolbehaviourtsarhassaid.
Butteachershavewarnedhandsupshouldbejustoneelementofawiderstrategytogetpupils
toengageintheclassroom.
TomBennetthassuggestedthatteachersaskingpupilstoraisetheirhandsiftheywanttoanswer
aquestionshouldbebackinfashionfollowingthebanningofthepracticeinsomeschools
altogether.
MrBennetttoldtheSundayTimesthatforthelastdecadehandsuphasbeengoingoutof
fashionbecauseitisperceivedasawayofencouragingonlycertainchildrentoanswer
questionsinclass.

Lecturers(ATL),shetoldBBCRadio4Todayprogrammethatraisinghandsisjustone
strategytogetchildrentoanswerquestionsintheclassroom.
MsKnappettsaid:Raisinghandsshouldbepartofavarietyofstrategiesthatteachersuse.I
myselfusethelollipopstickswithchildrensnameonsoyoucanrandomlypickoutwhois
goingtoansweraquestion.IhavethelollipopsticksandIpickthemoutrandomlytoseewhois
goingtoansweraquestion.
OtherwiseIwouldnameachildbecauseIthinktheyneedtobedrawnbackinIsometimes
wouldgetthechildrentotalkaboutanswersingroupsbeforeIaskthemtogivethatanswerto
thewholeclassbecausesometimeschildrendontputtheirhandsupbecausetheydontfeel
confidentatspeaking.
Othermethodstogetpupilstotakepartinansweringquestionsinclassincludeaskingstudents
toholdupanswersonwhiteboardsorprovidingthemwithcolourcodedcupstodeterminehow
welltheyhaveunderstoodalesson.

LondonUniversity,hasbeenachampionofstoppingchildrenraisingtheirhands.

Whatmattersisiftheteacherisonlychoosingtheoneswiththehandsupwiththeanswertoa
question.
Iftheyare,thentheyareonlyhearingfromasmallproportionoftheclassandtheyaremaking
decisionsaboutwhethertheclassisreadytomoveononthebasisofbadevidence.
Inourresearchwefoundteacherssayweletthekidsraisetheirhandsanywaybutwedo
chooseatrandom,buttheydont,theydoseemtobedrawntowardsthestudentswhoare
showingeagernesstoshareananswers.
MrWilliamhadsaidinaninterviewfiveyearsago:"Onlyaquarterofpupilsconsistentlyput
theirhandsup.Theycan'twaittotakepart,whileothersswitchoffcompletely."
