Welcome to Grade 11 English. This course emphasizes consolidation of literacy, critical thinking
and communication skills. Students will analyze informational texts and literary works from
various time periods, countries and cultures write research papers. summaries and complete an
independent study project; analyze the interactions among media forms, audiences, and media
industry practices. An important focus will be on establishing appropriate type, using language
effectively and metacognition

Evaluation:
The term work is worth 70% of the final course mark.
Students will be assessed and evaluated according to the following categories:

The final (Course Summative) evaluation is worth 30% of the final mark. This portion will consist
of a final independent study essay and presentations and a written exam. The mark breakdown
is as follows:

Classroom Expectations:
!

1. Students are expected to be in class on time (before the last bell( with the necessary
textbooks and equipment and have homework assignments completed.

2. Electronic devices are permitted in the classroom when working individually. This privilege
may be revoked. Note: Cellphones are not permitted in the classroom, as per school rules. (See
Agenda)

3. Textbooks are the property of the school board and are on loan to students. Students will not
receive the next text until the previous text is submitted to the teacher or replacement cost is
reimbursed.

4. All assignments submitted for evaluation must be neatly written in black or blue ink or word
processed. Assignments must be presented in MLA format (where appropriate).

5. Students who have an authorized absence on the day of a test are responsible for making
arrangements to complete it upon their return to school, during their own time. Students must
write test within one week of absence or they will lose this opportunity and receive a zero.

6. Academic integrity is important. All work submitted must be your own, with proper citations
where appropriate. Refer to agenda regarding consequence of plagerism.

7. Students must present on assigned oral presentation days. Failure to do so will result in a mark
of zero. If you are ill, your parent/guardian must call before the start of school and you need to
present a note upon your return to class.

8. Mark updates will be distributed periodically throughout the semester as they are also
accessible on teach assist. If you would like to discuss your marks or particular evaluation of
assignment you may make an appointment with me.

9. Please feel free to talk to me about modifying different assignments to suit certain interests
or needs.
