Curriculum content description:

Time: 8.40- 9.32


Topic: Essay

This lesson was a study session where revision and study skills are implemented.

Students prior knowledge and experience:


Essay structure.
Developing essay ideas.
Composing essays.

Learning purpose:
To help demonstrate the importance of a good essay plan. Help show that planning
before can help with appropriate research for the topic.

On completion of this lesson,


students will be able to:

we will come back together as a group and
using each groups input for each section,
construct the perfect essay. This will be
done by getting the students to vote for the
sections that they think are the most
effective.

Use the tools and skills provided to

plan.

Preparation and Resources:


The class will be split into 3 groups
Will require 3 A3 sheets of paper divided into 3 sections, labelled topic/introduction,
main body/developing and supporting and conclusion.

Catering for diversity


This is a Year 11 ATAR class therefore there is no real need for any adjustments for
diversity.

Learning Experiences:
1. Introduction:

Explain that we will be dividing into 3 groups and working on creating the
perfect persuasive essay.
Each group will be working on a different part and then we will rotate to
the next part.
The topic you will be arguing in support of is School hours should be
10am to 5pm.
You need to use persuasive techniques in your essay in order to effectively
persuade your audience.
For this exercise you are allowed to make up research.
You will have 10 minutes at each section before we move to the next one.
There will be a teacher at each section to guide you through.
When each group has completed each section we will come back together
as one big group and go through everyones essays.
Will discuss what makes them effective and why.
Will construct the perfect essay using the best bits from each group.
Class will be handed back to teacher to finish off the class.
2. Sequence of learning experiences:
Will work with them reminding them of persuasive techniques and keep
them focused on the task at hand.
The students will do the writing and work together as a group.
As these are year 11 ATAR students they really do not require too much
guidance.
3. Lesson conclusion:

When the groups come back together at the end we will go through each
groups sections and decide which parts are the most effective and why.
The idea of the lesson is to show the students that will a little extra
planning an essay can come together very quickly. This short exercise
demonstrates just how quick and easy it can be.

Lesson Evaluation:
The lesson worked well. There was nothing really that didnt work or anything that I
would change except maybe having a little longer in order to flesh out their ideas a
little more. But as this class is only a short study session, time did not allow for this
to happen. The students were all engaged and worked well in groups.
