Step 1
Assessment Results
Overall Grade: F
During School: 20%
Let's get to work. The school day is the critical time for implementing the Active & Healthy Schools Program, which can benefit students, teachers
and staff. Let's look at some steps for improving your Active & Healthy score during the school day.

Curriculum: 40%
Room for improvement. Studies show the importance of an effective PE curriculum to overall student health and academic performance. A
stronger emphasis on PE can go a long way toward creating an Active & Healthy environment.

Recess / Lunch: 75%

Great potential! How about some more nutritional education? A little more activity? Together, these key Active & Healthy areas can deliver
outstanding results.

After School: 40%

Room for improvement. Use Active & Healthy communications (such as a newsletter) to encourage AHS fundamentals and have a significant
impact on students' activity choices.

Step 2
What are at least two strengths and two weaknesses of your school? Describe each strength and weakness based on your
observation/experience as well as your results from the School Assessment Tool.
Two strengths concerning health and activity in my school are after school programs and recess/lunch. Since I am in
a middle school placement there are a variety of sports that the kids can participate in. In these sports the coaches all
give information and recommendation to eat healthy. Our kids are encouraged to play sports after school no matter
what the sport may be. During school hours the kids have to move outside after they are done eating lunch. During
lunch they can check out various types of balls while playing outside. Two weaknesses of my school are curriculum

and during school. I think it is important that all of us, as teachers give brain breaks through out our blocks because
this gives a chance to get up and move around for a bit. Also, we should be teaching about being healthy and active
in a more proactive manner.
What are at least two ways to improve the policies in place at your school? Explain detailed information for each way and
what you expect from each way.
Two ways to improve the policies in place at my school are to be more proactive and model better life choices. As
teachers our students look up to us and see us more than their parents during the day. When they see us making bad
health decisions on a daily basis, they think it is okay that they do the same. It is a domino effect and this will lead
into bad health decisions as an adult. Being more proactive throughout the school and advertise healthy living will
give a constant reminder to students to make wise decisions all day. We can achieve this by putting posters up,
having healthy snacks provided either through a school store or through vending machines, giving constant
reminders through announcements.
What are at least two ways that you can you use this information to engage administration, teachers, parents, students and
the community in promoting more healthful behaviors? Include a specific description for how to use the results from
the School Assessment Tool as well as your ideas for improvement.
I can use this information to engage the community by making them aware and having a plan of action. I believe that
a lot of the community thinks it would be expensive and a lot of work to make our school healthier since schools
have had such drastic budget cuts in the past several years. By having a plan of action the community will be more
willing to listen to what I have to say and be able to do their own research and make up their own opinion. Having
this plan will also make it easier on the school because some of the hard work will already be done.

How can the information obtained be used to support your potential topic for the Signature Assignment?
This information can be used to support my potential topic for the Signature Assignment by making the community
aware of how much more we could be doing for our children. This information will help me educate the community
and the school, get them involved, take a stance and start making healthier decisions in their own daily lives. I think
that making the community and school aware of how much more we could be doing is the first and most important
step to a healthier school and community.
