responsibilities and have a desire to work in partnership with organisations that are serious about
environmental issues. Wolseley UK has engaged in the Chain of Custody scheme for our Build Center
brand, as well as achieving BS EN ISO 14001:2004 accreditation as part of our commitment to the
continual improvement, prevention of pollution and a commitment to comply with applicable legal
requirements.
The Responsible Purchasing Policy for Timber

Wolseley UK has worked with the Timber Trade Federation to develop
The Responsible Purchasing Policy for Timber (RPP) since 2004. The
RPP is fundamentally a system of risk assessing products and
suppliers, which Wolseley UK is using to assess the legal and
sustainable status of the timber that it purchases.This is particularly
important where timber is from forest locations where certification schemes are not widely in place
e.g. Asia Pacific, South America etc...
The RPP system has proven to be a success. The Timber Trade Federation has given full backing to the
scheme, and will recommend that all members adopt the RPP system in the future. The RPP has also
been recognised by the UK Government as an excellent example of industry good practice in helping
to source legal and sustainable timber.
Chain of Custody Certification

Chain of Custody Certification
Chain of Custody certification is a globally
recognised, and independently regulated,
accreditation. It provides documented evidence
that certified products originate from certified,
well-managed forests and also verifies that these
products are not mixed with products from
uncertified forests at any point in the supply
chain.
Wolseley UK has held multi-site chain of custody
certification for the Build Center brand since
January 2004. Branches now offer a choice of
almost 2000 stocked products with FSC or PEFC
endorsement. This includes: sawn and machined
Chain of Custody
softwood, MDF mouldings, I-beams; panel

products such as MDF, OSB, chipboard,
chipboard flooring and plywood, as well as
hardwoods and special products available to
order. The Chain of Custody programme aims to
increase the number of branches within the
scheme to include all Build Center branches, and
to generate a continuous increase in certified
stock of all products. However, branches that do
not hold certification can still provide evidence
of legal felling and sustainability from our
suppliers.

The Build Center range of PSE (Planed Square Edge) softwood fits a variety of uses from door framing to moulding into newel
posts. Sourced from slow growing Scandinavian forests that provide a stable and workable product ideal for the professional
tradesman. The softwood sourced via our supplier partners is 100% PEFC certified giving assurance that the timber is
harvested from sustainable, well-managed forests. The majority of machined softwood is available in a variety of metric
lengths in 0.3m increments.

Skirting & Architrave

Remember when working out the length of timber required for skirting, allow for any cuts or waste when forming any corner
joints (mitre joints) or scarf joints in longer runs. This will ensure you order the quantity required to complete the job.

Fix weatherboard with the tongue edge uppermost to allow rainwater to run off more easily. If you are fitting cladding on an
uneven wall, you should first screw a series of battens to the wall and fix cladding to these.

ThermoWood
Thermowood is steam heated in a kiln to drive out moisture and resin. It is 50% more stable than untreated softwood, and
suffers less shrinkage, swelling, and distortion in response to atmospheric changes. It is easy to work with, lightweight
and theres no necessity to re-treat cut ends and drill holes. Suitable for interior and exterior use.

Thermowood is available in a variety of finished profiles or as treated sawn material in sizes up to a maximum of 50 x 150mm.

Flooring
PTG Flooring (Planed,Tongue & Grooved) can be used in a variety of flooring applications. Redwood flooring is the best option
for use as a clear stained floor as it has a smooth planed surface and attractive appearance. Whitewood flooring is ideal for
use where carpet, tile or wood flooring is the final flooring surface.

Face Cover
The tongue & groove joint provides a stable base while allowing for natural movement and expansion. There is no need to
glue the joint.
Flooring should be conditioned in situ for 2-3 weeks dependent upon conditions. As timber is a natural product this will
give it time to absorb or lose moisture so that when fitted there is less likelihood of excess movement after fitting.
Note: In some areas of the country PSE is used as floorboards in similar section sizes to the PTG shown.

requirements. This is still not a legal requirement but the majority of manufacturers now conform to these standards.

How many linear metres do you need to build your deck?

Check out the table that relates to the width of the deck board you are laying - the thickness does not matter. Then take the
width and lengh of the deck you want to build and see where the two columns meet.
For example, if your deck is to be 5m x 6m and you have decided to use the 150mm deck board, then you will require
approximatley 210m of decking (see example shown in table below). Always remember to add some extra metreage for
cutting and wastage.

How many linear metres do you need to build your deck?

Check out the table that relates to the width of the deck board you are laying - the thickness does not matter. Then take the
width and lengh of the deck you want to build and see where the two columns meet.
For example, if your deck is to be 5m x 6m and you have decided to use the 150mm Deck board, then you will require
approximatley 210m of decking (see illustration shown in table below). Always remember to add some extra metreage for
cutting and wastage.
