The surface and edge of the pile cap supporting the billboard was powdered and chalky with aggregates
easily chipping off (Photograph 1). This suggests weak concrete platform. We agreed to carry out Schmidt
hammer test on the pile cap to determine the structural integrity of the concrete.
The two steel girders (Photograph 2) for the billboard and tower (photograph 3 &4) up to 6m height were on
site. Welding operations for the back frame of the billboard were on going.
Brownish liquid rust stains were noticed in some of the welded joints . This suggests possible defects in the
joints. Mr. Kunle, however, assured us that special electrodes were being used for the joints and that the
defects will be corrected.
We also agreed to extend the clearance between the edge of the pile cap and the anchor bolts for increased
stiffness (see Photograph 7).
