Dr. Anthony Curtis. The Brief History of Social Media. University of North Carolina. 2013. 25
Nov. 2014.
In this article they overviewed the brief history of social media. This is important because
the events that happened back then shaped the events that are happening today and if I
know more about the background I will be able to understand the subject as a whole.
Carroll, J.A. & Kirkpatrick, R.L. Impact of Social Media on Adolescent Behavioral Health in
California. California Adolescent Health Collaborative. 2011. 19 Nov. 2014.
In this article they begin by informing us on what percentage of teens are actively using
social networking sites. It goes on in telling us about why they believe social media can
positively affect an adolescent's health. The author believes that social networks can
influence teens into getting more involved, because it is an easy and efficient way to find
people with similar interests. Then they open up the counter argument which is the risk
factors in how social media is affecting our adolescents health. It goes on by describing
to us how social networking can manipulate teens into engaging in inappropriate
behavior.
Debbie Harris. Cyberbullying Social Media and Teen Suicides. What is Going On? Do We
Comply. 2013. 21 Nov. 2014.

Debbie Harris makes good comments when she is talking be cyberbullying and how it
affects teens. She knows that not all teen suicides are caused through cyberbullying but
that they can be a very big contributing factor she brings up statistics on how many teens
are registered to a social media account. She basically wants to say that teens are the most
active users of social networking sites, and teen bullying happens a lot. Social network
sites make bullying something that could only happen at school and away from home but
having constant online availability makes bullying that much easier.
Ellen Niemer. Teenagers and Social Media. Alive. 2012. 19 Nov. 2014.
The article begins by talking about the generation gap between adolescents and their
parents. It sheds light on some very interesting topics, such as the way teens are more
technologically advanced than their parents. The author of this article backs up her
writing with statistics. One of her major points is the amount of time the average teen
spends online. The Author of this article has a very open point of view and isnt inclined
on there being one right or wrong answer.
Gwenn Schurgin O'Keeffe MD, K. Pearson, MD Council. The Impact of Social Media on
Children, Adolescents, and Families on Communications and Media. Pediatrics. 2013. 21.
Nov 2014.
In my reading I found that the authors made points on the good and bad sides of the effect
social media has on youth. The authors give the point that if we had social media
enveloped into schooling students would be able to work together on assignments and
they could benefit from one another. There also is the other side of the spectrum where
they talk about why it could be detrimental to the youth. With the goods theres the bads

and social media is a place where cyberbullying can happen to easily. The authors
provide some great information in this article.
Dr. Jim Taylor. The Bad, the Ugly, and the Good of Children's Use of Social Media. Huffington
Post. 2013. 19 Nov. 2014.
Doctor Jim Taylor talks about how social media has its up and downs however he has
looked at how social media is affecting our youth. Dr. Taylor mentions that facebook
depression is a huge factor in the effect it has on teens. He goes on by saying that teens
are more inclined to becoming addicted to the internet. He finishes by saying that social
media also can have pros like the ability to teach teens empathy.
Kris Gowen. Teens on social medias impact on relationships: Survey. Connect Safely. 2014. 25
Nov. 2014.
Kris Gowen advocates that teen social media usage impacts teen relationships. Kris
mentioned that social media has affected teens social skills, and affects teens
relationships. Social media has allowed teens who are in relationships be able to be in
their partners life all day whether it be literally or electronically it allows us to monitor
the other and restricts one's privacy. This affects relationships because everyone needs
space and social media makes it hard to get it.
Perri Klass, M.D. How Advertising Targets Our Children? New York Times. 2013. 19 Nov.
2014.
This article talks about how advertisers use media as a source to market their product.
This directly influences the youth, and this product is later bought by the parents.
Marketers find ways to expose their product to the youth and manipulate them into
buying it again and again; based on amount of exposure the product has.

This article gives advantages and disadvantages with how social networking is affecting
our youth and they go on by giving scientific evidence by researching the brain and how
it develops empathy but on the other hand they talk about how teens enjoy receiving the
comments and the likes on the photos they post.
Tarek Riman. Social media and education. Seom World. 2013. 21 Nov. 2014.
I need to broaden my searches and this website made really good points so this site
worked perfect. In this article Tarek Riman talked about the pros and cons of how social
media has affected the education system. Some of the cons were how it affects teens
social skills and this is taking away a skill from our youth. On the other hand there were
the pros and the one that stood out to me the most was that social media made the world a
smaller place we can access data from around the world within the blink of an eye.
Urs Gasser. Youth and Media. Cyber Law Harvard. 2014. 21 Nov. 2014.
While reading this website I noticed that is was entries form a Harvard University
website where people are surveyed so they can examine how Americans use the internet.
The Berkman Center For Internet & Society Put together entries about how teens access
the internet and what they look for in using social media and how parents think it affects
their behavior when they use it. The entries provide great evidence and what better
evidence is there then cold hard facts?
Youth Resources. Research Confirms Social Media's Impact on Adolescent Development.
Courier and Press. 2014. 25 Nov. 2014
In this article they enlighten us on how there are ways to make the negatives of social
media go away. One of the ways they described were to allow there to be a time where

students can use their electronics, and catch up on their social media lives. This article
has lots of facts it bases its arguments off of and it is hard to argue with straight facts.
