Scientific Method

1. Ask a Question
What do you want to know? What are you curious about? Why?

2. Do Background Research
Do some research online. Find out if your question has already been answered by reading through the
abstracts of scientific journals. This research will also help you write your hypothesis.

3. Hypothesis
Your hypothesis should be your most educated guess. Make sure you base this statement off of your
research.

4. Experiment
Conduct the experiment!

5. Collect/Analyze Data
Record your data in an appropriate manner (charts, tables, etc.). Analyze your data. What is your data
telling you?

6. Conclusion
What were the results of your experiment? Was your hypothesis proven or disproven? If it was proven
then you can communicate and publish your results. If it was not proven, start back at step one and
ask a new question or try a different procedure.
